314 Watson Street
1927 Monterey Revival
The Spanish eclectic style residence was constructed by master Carmel designer/builder M. J. Murphy and is one of the few known residential commissions of Murphy’s in Monterey. The home was a headquarters and meeting place for a family of pioneer educators and civic activists whose many contributions to the Monterey Peninsula remain a part of the community today.
The house, although subtle in design and small in scale, is craftsman built with strong historical associations with the architecture of Monterey’s past. It is a unique design that is not found elsewhere in the vicinity and has a high level of integrity to its original design. The property has been recognized as a historic resource and remains an important local resource in the context of the Old Town neighborhood.
Directions to the next house: Continue down Watson Street, turn right onto Scott Street (down the hill), then turn right onto Larkin Street (away from the Ocean). Look out for the Josephine Zimmerman-Metz Home (316 Larkin Street) on your right, #28 on the map below.
