NOTE: Reservations for our Member Appreciation party at the Perry House November 2 are FULL!  A waiting list has been formed, so if you find you can no longer attend, please email philbussey2@gmail.com so another can take your place.  Also please let her know if you can volunteer for a 30 minute check-in shift. 

Events Coming Up  

Thursday, October 27, 2022, 5 pm  “The Real Ambassadors: Dave and Iola Brubeck and Louis Armstrong Challenge Segregation Presentation by Keith Hatschek, Professor Emeritus, University of the Pacific at the Community Room of the Monterey Public Library.  Learn how their ground-breaking jazz musical at the 1962 Monterey Jazz Festival made history.  Free, but there is limited seating and registration is required at https://montereypl.libcal.com/event/9497318.  

Saturday, October 29, 10 am to 5 pm. – Rods on the Wharf.    Enjoy a collection of great classic cars at Custom House plaza, sponsored by Old Fisherman’s Grotto.  Free, but donations of canned goods will go to the Salvation Army. 

Saturday, October 29, 4:45-6:00 pm – Dance Center Autumn Musical Performance on the wharf.  Free.  No reservations.

Monday, October 31, 4-7 pm Halloween on the Wharf: Trick or Treat by the Bay-  Enjoy music, decorations, photo ops, and treats from participating merchants.  Halloween Costume Contest at 5 pm.   Up to $100 cash prizes in age categories under 8, 9-21 yrs, 22 and over and up to $150 for Groups of 3 or more.   More information at www.montereywharf.com

Wednesday, November 2, 2022, 5:30-7:30–Membership Appreciation Evening at the Perry House.   Enjoy great food, wine, beer and other beverages at the beautiful historic Perry House Event Center, 201 Van Buren Street, overlooking the bay.  This is a free celebration for adult paid members of Old Town Neighborhood Association, with wonderful food catered by Events by Classic.   This popular event is now full, but to be on the waiting list, email Phyllis Bussey at philbussey2@gmail.com ASAP  with RSVP in your subject line, and be sure to give the names of adult members, your address, email, and phone. Reservations are subject to availability on our waiting list, and member guests are charged $5.00 per person.   If you want to join or renew your membership, see details at the bottom of this bulletin.    Dues paid now will be valid through 2023.  Vaccine verification is not required, and we will have access to the house interiors as well as the carriage house.   

Saturday, November 5, 2022, 10 am to 12 noon. Free Wharf Walk with Maritime Historian Tim Thomas sponsored by Monterey’s Fisherman’s Wharf Association.  Tim will provide a cultural history walking tour of the Monterey Wharf and the surrounding neighborhood.  Tour is limited to 15 people, and is for ages 10-adult only.  Reservations can be made by calling Tim Thomas at 831-521-3304 or via email at timsarding@yahoo.com.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Monterey County Official Ballot Box at the Library Voters may drop their official sealed ballot in front of the Monterey Public Library at 625 Pacific Street anytime through election day, November 8. 2022.

Monterey Ice Rink at Custom House Plaza will be open November 25 to January 1.

Casa Serano is open Saturday and Sundays from 2-4 pm.  Free admission and talk by docents.  No RSVP necessary.

Warning-New Chalkless Parking Enforcement in Monterey- Monterey announced August 22 that they have implemented new chalk-less parking enforcement, so no tire mark does NOT mean you haven’t been monitored by parking enforcement.  Don’t get caught with an unexpected parking ticket!  Read the full announcement here.     

Monterey Free Trolley service has discontinued as of Labor Day until next summer.

Undergrounding Committee Seeks Interested Residents -Our Old Town Neighborhood Undergrounding Committee is working jointly with interested residents of Monterey Vista and New Monterey Neighborhoods to work on a plan to underground utilities. You can learn more and become part of this committee by going to montereyundergrounding.net. 

Monterey County Theater AllianceThe Monterey County Theater Alliance has been providing us many interesting theatrical presentations over zoom.  For an ongoing schedule for these events, usually free and on zoom, visit admin@theatremonterey.org.    Free theatrical presentations on topics of local history will usually show also under events.    Thank you, MCTA, for offering us so many interesting topics during the covid time of sheltering in place!
