April 15, 2026 Update and Events Bulletin

PARKING PROGRAM UPDATE – Cristie Steffy, Superintendent of the Parking Division, will be attending the Kim Talks event Saturday morning at 10 (see below).    Even with the parking division’s announcement that they will recommend that City Council allow existing residential parking permit (RPP) areas to continue in the updated program without requalification, it will still be important to let the council know that we want that too.  City Council will meet on May 5 and 19, but it is unknown the date it may be agendized.  When it does come before council, speaking up will be important.  You can simply say you support the recommendation by the parking division.  They really consider the number of people for and against an item (reference the agenda), both in council or in a letter, so numbers count.  You may write City Council at cityclerk@monterey.org or attend in person. You can look for upcoming City Council agendas at monterey.gov/agendas.

April 14, 2026 Parking Bulletin Update

HUGE PARKNG UPDATE

Just received from Cristie Steffy of the Parking Division:

“I wanted to share a quick update on the Residential Parking Program (RPP) in advance of a letter that will be sent to residents in existing RPP areas.

Building on our ongoing conversations, we will bring a recommendation to City Council in May to allow existing RPP areas to continue in the updated program without requiring requalification.

At this time:

  • The registration timeline is being extended
  • Existing permits remain valid
  • Time-restricted parking signage will remain in place

Please feel free to share this information with your neighborhood if helpful. The formal letter will be mailed out to all addresses in the RPP areas in the coming week.

I am happy to answer any questions you may have and thank you for your continued engagement.

Cristie Steffy

City of Monterey – Parking Division”

———————————————————————–

This is what we hoped for!  A big thank you to all who wrote letters, attended the April 6 meeting at City Hall and the City Council meeting April 7.   Also, a big shout out to all who helped contact their neighbors and distribute flyers, especially James MacFarlane, Paul Hierling, Mike Bell, and to Tom Reeves, president of New Monterey, for coordinating with our Old Town core group on strategy and who went door-to-door in his neighborhood.   Change was brought by the efforts of all of you who went above and beyond to make the city aware of the problems of registration and the impact of our parking needs!

Special Bulletin on Parking Program

Old Town Special Bulletin – Parking Program Deadline Extended

The City of Monterey is seeking to eliminate your preferential residential parking zone in

the Old Town Neighborhood unless enough residents register at the link below to

preserve it.

Preferential residential parking grants residents the right to park for 72 hours, and limits

non-residents to 1 hour of parking at a time. Eliminating these parking zones would

mean that tourists and adjacent uses such as business districts and schools would be

able to use our neighborhood as parking with no time restrictions beyond a 72 hour

limit. This would significantly impact parking along our streets.

Preserving the preferential residential parking zone is especially important to the

disabled, the elderly, the mobility-limited and those who may have difficulty walking long

distances to get to and from their vehicles. If the preferential residential parking zone is

eliminated, these neighbors will have a particularly hard time making multiple long trips

to and from their vehicles to get groceries or run errands.

In order to preserve your preferential residential parking permit zone you must

register at the link below by April 20. 51% of all the residents (not just 51% of those responding) on four contiguous blocks must register to essentially vote to retain the residential parking zone. For multi-unit housing, each unit has one vote to respond and be counted in the required percentage.

Registration is free and does not require a permit purchase. Residents can

register at: https://monterey.getapermit.net.

The city will hold a special meeting for Old Town residents at City Council

Chambers on Monday, April 6, at 6 pm.  A flyer about the meeting is attached.

If you would like to be updated on this issue as new information comes out, share

information you find out, or to help in spreading the word, please reply to this email.

You can contact the parking office at 831-646-3953 or at askparker@monterey.org.

More information and can be found on their webpage at:

https://haveyoursaymonterey.org/residential-parking-program

If you do not live on a block currently with a sign limiting hours of public parking, this bulletin does not apply to you.

For more information on Old Town Neighborhood Association activity to preserve these

parking zones, please contact Paul Hierling at phierling@hotmail.com
