Thursday, December 5, 2024, 3:30 pm “Alice in Wonderland” free movie rated G at the Community Room of the Monterey Public Library.  Free popcorn and drink as you watch the movie of the story come to life on the screen.  

Thursday, December 5, 6-8 pm – Parade of Lights in downtown Pacific Grove along Lighthouse.  Hear holiday music as you watch this spectacle of lighted floats and performers.  Free.

Friday, December 6 and Saturday, December 7, 10-4 pm Holiday Book Sale at the Monterey Public Library.  Funds go to help the library.  Preview Reception Thursday, Dec 5, 5-7 pm.   Hardbacks $2, paperbacks $1.

Friday, December 6, 5-6 pm – Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony.  Enjoy hot cider and cookies as you sing with live musicians the songs of the season, anticipating the finale of the lighting of our tree at the Colton Hall lawn. Free.

Friday, December 6, 5-8 pm, First Friday at the Monterey Museum of Art, 559 Pacific Street – Enjoy free admission to the museum and the new interactive Illuminado Exhibit.  Refreshments may be purchased. Admission to the museum is free the entire month of December.

Friday, December 6, 5-9 pm.- Christmas on the Wharf begins, and continues for three weekends, with special entertainment, decorations including a giant 19 foot Christmas tree. and free visits with Santa.  See announcements below for hours and montereywharf.com for event schedule and more details.

Saturday, December 7, 11-3 – Free Family Fun Day at the Monterey Museum of Art.  Enjoy art activities and free admission.

Saturday, December 7, 3-5 pm Holiday Open House at the Venture Gallery, 260 Alvarado Street in the Portola Hotel.  Celebrate the season and see the opening of their December Group Show.  Enter a raffle with one lucky recipient receiving a $200 gallery gift certificate.

Sunday, December 8, 5-7 pm – Brighten the Harbor Lighted Boat Parade   Watch the boats decorated with holiday lights cruise down the coastline from the harbor, past the shops and restaurants on Cannery Row and return.  

Tuesday, December 10, 5-9 pm Holiday at the Inns in downtown Pacific Grove.  Enjoy music and treats as you visit the historic inns decorated for the holidays.  More information and tickets at pacificgrove.org. $30.

Saturday, December 21, 2024, 5:30 pm “A Christmas Carol”, a performance on Zoom by British actor-writer Howard Burnham, who first presented the program in Malton, England, the site that inspired Charles Dickens.   The performance, sponsored by Monterey County Theater Alliance, will be in the manner presented by Dickens on his 1867 tour of the United States.  Free, but donations are appreciated. November 22-January 5 – Ice Skating by the Bay returns to Custom House Plaza.  $15 plus $5 skate rental  

Free Wharf Walks by Maritime Historian Tim Thomas the first Saturday of every month from 10am to noon.  Hear and experience a two hour cultural history tour entitled “Tales of the Sea: Stories from the Monterey Bay”.  Meet at the head of Old Fisherman’s Wharf near the pink Harbor House store.  Advance reservations are required and can be made by contacting Tim Thomas at 831-521-3304 or by email at timsardine@yahoo.com.  Participants must be 10 and above with a maximum group of 15 people. 

Christmas on the Wharf– See dazzling decorations and enjoy free live entertainment weekends on the wharf throughout December until January 2.  Santa visits Fridays, December 6, 13, and 20 from 5-9 pm, Saturdays, December 7, 14 and 21 from 11am-9 pm; and Sundays, December 8, 15, and 22 from 1-6 pm.  Special toy drive to benefit the Salvation Army.  More information and schedule of entertainment can be found on Montereywharf.com.

The Presidio Museum of Monterey is open Saturdays and Sundays 10-4 pm – Learn the fascinating history of our Presidio, including the early indigenous settlers, the founding of the fort, the history during three wars, and the history of the Buffalo Soldiers. An interpretive walk with great views of the bay lead up to the Sloat Monument.  You can take a short cut from Van Buren over the creek bridge to reach it from Old Town.  Free.

Second Saturdays, 9-10 and 10:30-11:30 am- Tours of Ed Ricketts Pacific Biological Laboratory   subject to availability.   “Doc Ricketts” was featured prominently in John Steinbeck’s novels about Cannery Row, and the lab at 600 Cannery Row was the site where the idea of a Monterey Jazz festival was born.   Tours are free, but limited in size.   As waiting lists fill quickly, this item is listed as announcements so you can reserve in advance at this link:  https://montereypl.libcal.com/calendar/pbl?cid=15157&t=g&d=0000-00-00&cal=15157&inc=0.  You are also welcome to drop by without a reservation to self-tour this historic site from 12-4 pm on the second Saturday.

American Association of University Women – This national organization promotes equity for women in the workplace and in education.  In addition to supporting  education through scholarships, they have book clubs, social events, monthly speakers, a Romancing the Coast monthly adventure, a hiking/walking group, and other interesting events.   See http://mpb-ca.aauw.net for more information. 

Monterey Civic Club – Founded in 1906, the club owns and meets monthly at the House of the Four Winds, located at 540 Calle Principal. This beautiful and historic adobe is believed to be the oldest women’s clubhouse in continuous use in the United States.  Members meet the first Tuesday of each month for lunch and a social program ($20), often with a speaker of importance to members.  Contact (831) 747-1072 for more information.

Gentrain Society is an organization for life-long learners.  They generally meet the first and third Wednesdays from 1:30-2:30 at the Monterey Peninsula College Lecture Forum #103.  Lectures are free and open to the public (except $3.00 parking fee).  Topics range from drama, history, and understanding civilizations and more.  Courses are also offered, along with trips organized for special events.  Note: Gentrain has arranged a special bus trip to tour the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento on October 27.  For more information, visit gentrain.org – Special events.

October 25, 2024 Events Bulletin

Sunday, October 27, 7:15 am to 6 pm Travel and Private Tour of the famous Crocker Mansion and Art Gallery in Sacramento, arranged by Gentrain.  A few seats are still available and open to the public.  Meet at Monterey Peninsula College Lot B at 7:15 for this excursion and private tour.  More information and RSVP to Rene Kimsey, 808-222-5348.  $95 per person.

Sunday, October 27 ,4-8 pm Pumpkin Plunge and Dia De Los Mertos Family Evening at the Monterey Sports Center.  Kids up to 17 years old can jump into a pool filled with pumpkins.  Pumpkins are ONLY available to the first 100 registrants.  Children 5 and under must be accompanied by an adult.  Following the plunge, there will be music, dancing, and Ohana exhibits to enjoy from Montage Health.

Thursday, October 31, 2024, 4-7 pm – Halloween on the Wharf & Costume Contest – Come to Old Fisherman’s Wharf in costume and trick or treat at participating merchants as you listen to spooky music DJ’d by Dave Marzetti and take photos with the Halloween décor.  At 5 pm, register to participate in the costume contest in front of Rockfish Harbor Grill.   At 7 pm, participants of the costume contest can be viewed on stage from seats in front of Rockfish Harbor Grill with cash prizes awarded by age categories of under 8, 9-21, 22 and older, and groups.  Must be present to win.  A few volunteers are needed to help with the costume contest.   Email info@montereywharf.com if you can help.   More information at www.montereywharf.com

Wednesday, November 6, 2024, 6-8 pm – Old Town’s Neighborhood Association’s Annual Member Appreciation Party at the Perry House.  This beautiful home has decks overlooking the bay, and a welcoming lawn, carriage house, and fire pit for this catered event.   Make new friends as you enjoy great food, wine, beer and non-alcoholic beverages, free to members paid for 2024.  We are now accepting reservations from paid members.  RSVP to our social chairperson, Phyllis Bussey, at philbussey2@gmail.com.  Let her know also if you are willing to help at check-in for a short 30-minute shift. Volunteering is a great way to meet your neighbors.  This party is limited to 100 members, and fills up fast, so please RSVP as soon as possible.   The Perry House is at 201 Van Buren Street, on the corner of Van Buren and Scott.

Gentrain Society is an organization for life-long learners.  They generally meet the first and third Wednesdays from 1:30-2:30 at the Monterey Peninsula College Lecture Forum #103.  Lectures are free and open to the public (except $3.00 parking fee).  Topics range from drama, history, and understanding civilizations and more.  Courses are also offered, along with trips organized for special events.  Note: Gentrain has arranged a special bus trip to tour the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento on October 27.  For more information, visit gentrain.org – Special events.

Thursday, October 17, 7-8:30 pm – Election Forum for Candidates for Monterey Peninsula Water Management District Director, Division 3 at New Monterey Hilltop Community Center, 871 Jessie St (Parking available on Divisidero Street).  Hear the candidates views on water, an important issue to the peninsula and housing.  The forum will be conducted by the League of Women Voters.  Old Town is in this Division.

Saturday, October 19, 10:30-noon – Bocce!  Fall is here and so is the annual OTNA bocce game!  On Saturday, October 19 we will be playing bocce at the courts at Custom House Plaza.  No experience is necessary; we welcome all playing levels.  OTNA will provide equipment as well as soft drinks and light snacks.  Bring your morning coffee and join us for a fun morning of fresh air, bocce and friendly conversation with your neighbors.   You will find we mean it when we say no experience necessary.  Easy rules will be explained, so just enjoy!

Saturday, October 19, 5-6:30; 6:30-8:00 – Trick or Treating and Movie on Colton Lawn – Enjoy early Halloween walk-through Trick or Treating on the Colton Lawn from 5-6:30, followed by the movie “Hotel Transylvania” on the Colton Lawn  at 6:30.   Bring chairs and/or blanket to sit on. 

Thursday, October 31, 2024, 4-7 pm – Halloween on the Wharf & Costume Contest – Come to Old Fisherman’s Wharf in costume and trick or treat at participating merchants as you listen to spooky music DJ’d by Dave Marzetti and take photos with the Halloween décor.  At 5 pm, register to participate in the costume contest in front of Rockfish Harbor Grill.   At 7 pm, participants of the costume contest can be viewed on stage from seats in front of Rockfish Harbor Grill with cash prizes awarded by age categories of under 8, 9-21, 22 and older, and groups.  Must be present to win.  A few volunteers are needed to help with the costume contest.   Email info@montereywharf.com if you can help.   More information at www.montereywharf.com.

The Presidio Museum of Monterey is open Saturdays and Sundays 10-4 pm – Learn the fascinating history of our Presidio, including the early indigenous settlers, the founding of the fort, the history during three wars, and the history of the Buffalo Soldiers. An interpretive walk with great views of the bay lead up to the Sloat Monument.  You can take a short cut from Van Buren over the creek bridge to reach it from Old Town.  Free.

Sunday, October 13, 2024, 12:00 and 2:30- Historical Reenactment of the California Constitutional Convention of 1849 at Colton Hall, where it all happened.  See the participants (in costumes!) debate the issues.  Seats are limited, and you must register at Monterey.gov/museums.

Sunday, October 13, 1-5 pm – Celebrate the 179th Birthday of Old Fisherman’s Wharf with live music from the Money Band, photo ops with a Stormtrooper and more.  Free Candy Crawl for the first 179 kids by collecting a piece of candy at each of the three candy stores on the wharf.  Get a piece of wharf-themed cake with Dave Marzetti, master of ceremonies, at 3:30pm in front of Abalonetti’s.  Meet and greet Monterey police and fire men and women from 1-4 pm.

Saturday, October 5, 10:00 am Wharf Walk with Maritime Historian Tim Thomas “Uncovering the Legacy of Monterey Bay’s Sardine Industry”.   Meet at the head of Old Fisherman’s Wharf near the pink “Harbor House” store (#1 Old Fisherman’s Wharf, Monterey).  Free, but advance reservations are required.  Participants can reserve their spot by calling Tim Thomas at (831) 521-3304 or emailing timsardine@yahoo.com. Friday, September 6-Sunday, September 8, 2024 – Festa Italia – at the Custom House Plaza.  Enjoy this free festival and purchase delicious food and gifts from vendors.  Friday, 3-9 pm – Festival opens with food, wine, beer and vendors.  Dance under the stars with the All Star Band 6-9 pm in the plaza.  Saturday 10-9 pm, with 10 am mass at the cathedral followed by 11:30 opening ceremonies and Procession to Old Fisherman’s Wharf for the traditional Blessing of the Fishing Fleet. 1-1:20 Fisherman’s Wharf Calamari Cooking Demonstration by Chef Tene Shake at Kokomo’s/Grotto Fish Market.  Music all day and 6:30-9 pm dancing under the stars with the Money Band.  Sunday noon-6 pm with music, vendors and food all day.  Bocce tournament Saturday and Sunday at the custom house courts.  For full description of the events and music performances, visit festaitaliamonterey.org.

The next Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) class will be on three consecutive Saturdays, September 21, 28 and October 5, from 8 am to 5 pm.  CERT students learn emergency medicine and rescue techniques, using commonly available materials and many other emergency skills.  The trainings are free of charge.  To enroll, send an email of interest to training@montereycert.org.

American Association of University Women – This national organization promotes equity for women in the workplace and in education.  In addition to supporting  education through scholarships, they have book clubs, social events, monthly speakers, a Romancing the Coast monthly adventure, a hiking/walking group, and other interesting events.   See http://mpb-ca.aauw.net for more information. 

Monterey Civic Club – Founded in 1906, the club owns and meets monthly at the House of the Four Winds, located at 540 Calle Principal. This beautiful and historic adobe is believed to be the oldest women’s clubhouse in continuous use in the United States.  Members meet the first Tuesday of each month for lunch and a social program ($20), often with a speaker of importance to members.  Contact (831) 747-1072 for more information.

Gentrain Society is an organization for life-long learners.  They generally meet the first and third Wednesdays from 1:30-2:30 at the Monterey Peninsula College Lecture Forum #103.  Lectures are free and open to the public (except $3.00 parking fee).  Topics range from drama, history, and understanding civilizations and more.  Courses are also offered, along with trips organized for special events.  To see more information, visit gentrain.org.

The meeting will be held at the Monterey Peninsula American Legion Post 41, Veteran’s Boulevard off Jefferson and High Streets.  This presentation was arranged by Monterey Vista Neighborhood Association who has generously invited our neighborhood to attend.  There will be presentations by Lisa Alameda of the Community Emergency Response Team, Fire Insurance presented by Jeannie Ferrara, a Fire Wise Presentation, and a presentation on the Community Wildfire Protection Plan by Captain JD Sheldon of Monterey Fire Department.   After the meeting, guests are invited to purchase drinks and relax at the Legion Bar.    Please pass on flyer attached to others that may be interested.

Wednesday, August 14, noon to 5 pm- The Little Car Show – on Lighthouse Avenuein downtown Pacific Grove.  The show features more than 100 small vehicles 25 years and older from all over the world.  Free.

Wednesday, August 14, 3 pm – Estimated Arrival of the Pebble Beach Motoring Classic at Casa Palmero, 1700 17-Mile Drive.   Catch a glimpse as the classic beauties drive to Pebble Beach from Highway One after completing the 10-day, 1500 mile trek from Kirkland Washington down the coast, or cheer them as they arrive at Casa Palmero, in Pebble Beach.

Thursday, August 15, 7-12:00 noon- Tour d’Elegance – Catch a glimpse of beautiful, classic automobiles as they head from Pebble Beach, down 17-Mile Drive to Highway 1 on down to Big Sur and back, often with their owners in period costume!   Cars line up on Portola Road in Pebble Beach.  Tour departs at 9:30 and returns to Pebble Beach at 12 pm.

Friday, August 16, noon – 5 pm – Pacific Grove Concours Auto Rally – 12 to 4 pm, view classic cars on Lighthouse Avenue at Forest St.  Awards for best in categories is at 4 pm.  Rally drive launches at 5 pm with return of cars at 6 pm.  Free.

Saturday, August 17, 8 am-1:30 pm – Concours d’Lemons – at Seaside City Hall, 440 Harcourt Avenue, Seaside.  Spectators are free to view the rust buckets, misfits, ugly and truly awful of the automotive world.  As cars are judged on worst in class, it is well-known and encouraged to offer bribes. 

Saturday, August 17, 10 am – noon – Calamari/Squid Themed Wharf Walk led by maritime historian Tim Thomas.  Meet at the head of Old Fisherman’s Wharf by the pink Harbor House store.  Free, but advance reservations are required and tour is limited.  Must RSVP to timsardine@yahoo.com or at 831-521-3304.  Ages 10 and up.

Corral of Westerners – Local group of western history buffs meets at St. Timothy’s fellowship basement room, 52 Soledad in Monterey on the second Monday each month to hear a speaker on topics of history in the west, with emphasis on our local area.  $2.00/meeting (annual dues $20).  Refreshments served.
