Thursday,  September 14, 2023, 12 noon- Free Concert at Colton Hall, with cellist Michelle Djokic, sponsored by Monterey Public Library.

Saturday, September 16, 8 am-2pm – Annual Sandcastle Building contest at Carmel Beach between  10th and 12th Avenue.  Building at 8 am; Judging at 12 noon.  Free.  The theme this year is “Time Travel Into the Future”.  Everyone who would like to build a castle can enter the contest by coming to the registration booth across from 11th Avenue on the beach, and judges bestow awards for multiple categories, from the coveted Golden Shovel to the tongue-in cheek Sour Grapes.  Because bribery (non-monetary) is encouraged, it’s not unusual to see platters of food, bottles of wine, chair massages and other indulgences being offered to the people in charge.  For more information call Carmel Community Services at (831) 620-2020.

Saturday, September 16, 3-6 pm- Artist Reception at the Venture Gallery Meet September’s featured artist, Tamara Selyangina, and view her show “Beautiful Monterey Peninsula” which is on display the month of September, 10-6 daily (2-6 pm Tuesdays).  Venture Galleries is located in the Portola Hotel at 260 Alvarado Street.

Tuesday, September 19, 6:30-8:30 $2 Tuesday Classic Films at the Stanton Center, Custom House Plaza.   “The Lady Vanishes”, made in 1938, this mystery thriller film was directed by Alfred Hitchcock and stars Margaret Lockwood and Michael Redgrave. 

Tuesday, September 26, 6:30-8:00 pm. “The 39 Steps” at $2 Tuesday Movie Night at the Stanton Center, Custom House Plaza.  This 1935 British spy thriller was directed by Alfred Hitchcock and stars Robert Donat and Madeleine Carroll.   

Saturday, September 30 and Sunday, October 1, 11 am – 5 pm.  Monterey County Artist Studio Tours.  A self-guided tour of artists’ studios and exhibition spaces.   A catalog of artists and images of their work is available at artshabitat.org.  A map can be found at bit.ly/mcast2023. 

Saturday, October 7 and Sunday, October 8, 11 am – 5 pm.  Monterey County Artist Studio Tours.  A second weekend of self-guided tours of artists’ studios and exhibition spaces.   A catalog of artists and images of their work is available at artshabitat.org.  A map can be found at bit.ly/mcast2023. 

Sunday, October 8, 1-5 pm 178th Birthday Celebration of the Monterey Wharf – Enjoy an afternoon of fun on the wharf with live music from the Money Band 1-4 pm, a birthday cake cut at 3:30 in front of Abalonettis, a meet and greet with Monterey Police and Fire 1-4 pm, and a commemoration of the Argentine pirate Bourchard who raided and occupied Monterey in 1818. Fun photo ops with storm troopers, pirate statues, and a costumed birthday cake.  NEW THIS YEAR: A special Wharf Birthday Party Candy Crawl on the Wharf – a free piece of candy at Candy World, Wharf Chocolate Factory and Carousel Candies for the first 178 attendees!   Dave Marzetti hosting as Master of Ceremonies.

Saturday, October 14, 2023 10:30-12:00 noon.  Old Town plays Bocce by the Bay –  If you have come before, you know that we mean it when we say no experience is necessary.  The rules are simple and reviewed that morning.   We make up for skill with a great amount of enthusiasm and camaraderie.  Members rotate into teams so we play with others and get to know more about our neighbors.  Snacks and equipment are provided.  No RSVP necessary.   Meet at the bocce courts by the Custom House Plaza.

Wednesday, October 18, 7 pm Old Town Neighborhood Association Meeting at MIIS McKone Building Conference Room, 499 Pierce Street.   You may also participate on zoom (details to follow).  Our special guest will be PK Diffenbaugh, Superintendent of Monterey Peninsula Unified School District to discuss housing for teachers in the district.   The meeting is open to all residents of Old Town, regardless of membership.

Wednesday, November 1, 2023 -Old Town Neighborhood Association Annual Member Appreciation Evening at the Perry House. 6pm-8pm –  This is our annual fabulous, catered party at the Perry House free for members of Old Town Neighborhood Association.  Enjoy an evening of great food, wine, beer and other beverages at this lovely, historical home overlooking the harbor.  If you are not a member yet, please see the bottom of this bulletin.

Monterey History and Art New Exhibition – “Bounty of the Sea” at the Stanton Center

“Extraordinary Valor: The Lost History of the Buffalo Solders in Monterey” new exhibit now open on Saturdays and Sundays 10am-4pm at the Lower Presidio Museum.  Free.
