Thursday, February 29, 6:00 pm- Monterey Budget Listening Session for Residents – at Monterey Public Library Community Room- Come talk to the city regarding your priorities for our city budget.   Also, please take city survey in announcement section below.

Friday, March 1, 2024 – 5-7 pm  First Friday at the Museum. Enjoy FREE after-hours access at the Museum on the first Friday of every month. Join us for an evening of art, music, and community! Live music by Sabelle.

Friday, March 1, 2024  7-9 pm – Opening Reception for Five New Exhibits at the Pacific Grove Art Center, 168 Lighthouse Avenue, Pacific Grove. Free, but donations are appreciated.  See the Childress, Joachim and Kuksht’s “Styles and Perspective” exhibit in the Gill Gallery, Lesley Anne Spowart”s “Creature Comforst” in the Dyke Gallery, Barbara Lee Furbush’s “Perspeactives: Reflections on/of Self” in the Annand Gallery, Katie Simpson’s exhibit of “Thicket Hearted Spring” in the Boyer Gallery, and Big Sur Charter School’s “Naturally We Love Art” exhibit in the Small Halls.  The exhibits will be on view through April 25.  Glenn Leon-Guerrero will be the musical guest on the keyboards at the opening reception.

Friday, March 1, 2024 – Merienda “Tickets” go on sale for members of the Monterey History and Art Association (see https://montereyhistory.org to join, purchase reservations, or for more information).  The Merienda June 1st is Monterey’s annual celebration of the 254th anniversary of the founding of our pueblo, held in the Memory Garden behind the Pacific House.  The senses are enlivened by this colorful and extravagant celebration featuring a barbecue buffet of stellar food prepared by chefs from Old Fisherman’s Grotto and their team and served by local celebrities.  Mariachis, folklorico dancing on stage, and exquisite pagaentry mark this as a signature event for Monterey, rarely seen by non-locals.  MHHA Member price $100.   Non- MHAA members can sign up after April 1 for $125/per person).  You can ask to sit at an Old Town neighborhood table until filled, but please let us know when your MHAA reservation is confirmed by emailing oldtownneighborhood@gmail.com.

Saturday, March 2, 2024, 1:30 – Candle Making Workshop at Monterey Museum of Art – Free family fun day.

Saturday, March 2, 2024 10-noon – Free Wharf Walk “The History of Whaling on the Monterey Bay”.  This walking tour of the wharf with Marine Historian Tim Thomas will enhance your knowledge of this historic area.  Advance reservations are required by calling Tim Thomas at (831) 521-3304 or via email timsardine@yahoo.com. The tour is for ages 10-adult only, with no more than 15 people.  Tours start near the pink Harbor House on Fisherman’s Wharf.  

Sunday, March 3, 2024 2-4 pm, “Art and Artists in Casa Serano”, a presentation and tour by art expert Terry Trotter at the Casa Serano, 412 Pacific Street, sponsored by Monterey History and Art Association.  Free to MHAA members; Non-members $10.


Saturday, March 9, 1:00 – Docent Lead Tour of Jo Mora Exhibit at the Stanton Center, Custom House Plaza.   Old Town social committee has arranged a special tour by Peter Hiller, author and expert on artist Jo Mora, for which OTNA will pay the $5.00 tour fee for members of OTNA.   Tour is limited to 25 members, so please rsvp to philbussey2@gmail.com.  A link to Jo Mora collection is https://jomoracollection.org/.

STORM HELP- Free Sandbags are available to fill at the Fire Station, Pacific and Jefferson Streets.  Free charging of phone and warmth are offered at the Monterey Public Library.

Old Town Neighborhood Association Board welcomes new members to run for a position on our board.  We have seven directors who serve for one-year terms, and committees related to undergrounding of utilities and social events, plus we welcome ideas you may bring.  Reply to this email if you are interested. 

Celebrate Valentines on the Wharf See colorful Valentines decorations and get photo ops on the wharf.  Support local businesses while you celebrate the season!

Local Elections Clerks Needed.  The League of Women Voters have announced that volunteers are needed to be election clerks for the March 5th elections.  Mandatory training is given February 15th at 2 pm or 6 pm or February 16th at 10 am.   Call Pamela Stewart at 719-331-2214 if you can help. 

Monterey’s Rental Registry Opens.   Effective January 1, 2024, owners of rental property in Monterey must register their rental unit on the city’s new Rental Inventory Portal prior to March 1.  If an owner owns and manages three or less rental units in Monterey, an exemption may be requested, but filing for the exemption must also be done by March 1.  More information and the form to register can be found at https://monterey.org/residents/neighborhoods___housing/rental_inventory.php

COMMUNITY GROUPS AND CLUBS

Are you interested in finding others with your interests?  Below are some of the other local organizations that welcome new members:

American Association of University Women – This national organization promotes equity for women in the workplace and in education.  In addition to supporting  education through scholarships, they have book clubs, social events, monthly speakers, a Romancing the Coast monthly adventure, a hiking/walking group, and other interesting events.   See http://mpb-ca.aauw.net for more information. 

Monterey Civic Club – Founded in 1906, the club owns and meets monthly at the House of the Four Winds, located at 540 Calle Principal. This beautiful and historic adobe is believed to be the oldest women’s clubhouse in continuous use in the United States.  Members meet the first Tuesday of each month for lunch and a social program ($20), often with a speaker of importance to members.  Contact (831) 747-1072 for more information.

Corral of Westerners – Local group of western history buffs meets at St. Timothy’s fellowship basement room, 52 Soledad in Monterey on the second Monday each month to hear a speaker on topics of history in the west, with emphasis on our local area.  $2.00 (annual dues $20).  Refreshments served.
