Friday, Jun-7, 5-7 pm  – First Friday: The Outdoor Edition-  Celebrate summer in Frances Elkins Park, right next to the Monterey Museum of Art on Pacific Street.   Enjoy free admission to the museum, live music, bites and drinks, and a plein air art activity. 

Friday, June 7-Sunday June 9 – Jade Festival in the Custom House Plaza.  Friday 1-7, Saturday 10-6 and Sunday 10-4 pm.

Saturday, June 8, 10:30 am – “ The World’s Toughest Row” – Cheer the nine teams on as they launch from our shores to race for the Hanalei Bay, Kauai, in the Hawaiian Islands.  The boats are currently launched between wharves 1 and 2.  You can visit the nine teams from around the world, 70% made up of women.  Once the race starts, you can track the teams live through the YB Races app – ybtracking.com/yb-races-app.

Sunday, June 9, 2024, 2-6 pm- Meet the Artist: France Ruhnke, Venture Gallery’s Featured June Artist.  See her collection entitled  “Contours of Nature: Haute Couture, Botanical and and Continuity” at the gallery at 260 Alvarado through the month of June.   Her unique, two-dimensional art incorporates textures with paint, fabric, wire, and papier maché.   Her collection will be on display through June.

Sunday, June 9, 6-8 pm. Trivia Night with Jeopardy! Master Sam Buttrey to benefit the Monterey Public Library Friends and Foundation.  Teams of 5 or 6 will compete and between rounds, we’ll learn what it’s like to play on America’s favorite game show.  Light appetizers and refreshments will be served.  Space is limited and registration is required at https://www.investinmpl.org/event/trivia-night-with-jeopardy-master-sam-buttrey/.

Thursday June 13, 12:30 pm Free Arts and Literature Tour starting at Custom House Plaza, as part of CA State Parks Week.  In addition to hearing passages read aloud about the Monterey Bay area by notablewriters, tourgoers will be able to view some of the park’s impressive art pieces, especially when the tour makes its way inside Casa Soberanes. Saturday, June 15, 2024, 11 am to 3 pm- Community Craft Day at the Pacific House Museum.  Learn about candle making in early California and take home your own beeswax candle.  Check in at the Pacific House.  Sponsored by California State Parks in celebration of State Parks Week.

Sunday, June 16, 2024 – Father’s Day on the Wharf and Special Short Story Contest- Enjoy Father’s Day and photo ops on the wharf, decorated to honor our dads.  Old Fisherman’s Wharf is having an “Ultimate Dad Tribute” Short Story Contest: Email a short story up to 500 words describing when your dad did something truly amazing that impacted your life.  Submissions are due by midnight of  June 16.  There will be a drawing from the entries and winners notified by July 31.  The three winners will receive either a $100, $50 or $25 Certificate in Wharf Dollars that can be used at any merchant on Old Fisherman’s Wharf.  Full info at montereywharf.com. 

Thursday, June 27, 6:30-8:30 – “Steinbeck, Ricketts and the Western Flyer: The Intersection of Science and the Arts” at MIIS Irvine Auditorium, McCone Building 499 Pierce St/Jeferson.  Free lecture including fascinating historical images by Susan Shillinglaw, a Steinbeck scholar, and Sherry Flumerfelt, Executive Director of the Western Flyer Foundation, followed by a free wine and cheese reception.  Attendees can enter to win a drawing for a free tour of the docked Western Flyer.  Free, but must RSVP at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/steinbeck-ricketts-and-the-western-flyer-the-intersection-of-science-and-the-arts-tickets-914936849747?aff=oddtdtcreator.  

Thursday, July 4, 10 am – Annual Independence Day Parade begins at Polk and Alvarado, continues down Alvarado, turns left at Del Monte and circles back on Calle Principal to Jefferson.  The party continues on the lawn at Colton Hall. 

Thursday, July 4, 1 pm – Monterey County Pops! Free live concert at Devendorf Park, Carmel on Ocean and Junipero Streets.  At 1 pm hear the Monterey Peninsula Gospel Community Choir.  At 2 pm the concert by Monterey County Pops! Begins.

July 5, 7-9 pm -Tiny Treasures Art Show in support of the non-profit Pacific Grove Art Center, 568 Lighthouse Avenue, Pacific Grove. Opening reception and fundraiser featuring miniature art donated by local artists.

Scholarship Applications Requested – The Monterey County Historical Society is pleased to announce that its new website has been launched and that one of the most important components of its website is to solicit scholarship applications. Please view their new site at: https://mchsmuseum.com

Monterey CERT new training class will be held on May 4, 11, and 18 each day 8-5 pm.   Attendance all three days is necessary to graduate.  Classes teach basic preparedness skills, plus valuable skills on searching for lost persons, helping our fire and police departments in duties that relieve them to handle emergencies, such as crowd control and setting up a rehab station for first responders.   You can sign up to participate by emailing training@montereycert.org with your full name, physical resident address, cell and home phone numbers, and the email you most commonly use.

STORM HELP- Free Sandbags are available to fill at the Fire Station, Pacific and Jefferson Streets.  Free charging of phone and warmth are offered at the Monterey Public Library.

Monterey County’s New Emergency Alerting System is up and available.  Residents need to update or create an account by visiting alertmoontereycounty.org.  Official public safety text messages will come from 65513 and phone calls will come from 831-308-4911.  For more information, visit alertmry.org/informed.

Monterey’s Rental Registry Opens.   Effective January 1, 2024, owners of rental property in Monterey must register their rental unit on the city’s new Rental Inventory Portal prior to March 1.  If an owner owns and manages three or less rental units in Monterey, an exemption may be requested, but filing for the exemption must also be done by March 1.  More information and the form to register can be found at https://monterey.org/residents/neighborhoods.

COMMUNITY GROUPS AND CLUBS

Are you interested in finding others with your interests?  Below are some of the other local organizations that welcome new members:

American Association of University Women – This national organization promotes equity for women in the workplace and in education.  In addition to supporting  education through scholarships, they have book clubs, social events, monthly speakers, a Romancing the Coast monthly adventure, a hiking/walking group, and other interesting events.   See http://mpb-ca.aauw.net for more information. 

Monterey Civic Club – Founded in 1906, the club owns and meets monthly at the House of the Four Winds, located at 540 Calle Principal. This beautiful and historic adobe is believed to be the oldest women’s clubhouse in continuous use in the United States.  Members meet the first Tuesday of each month for lunch and a social program ($20), often with a speaker of importance to members.  Contact (831) 747-1072 for more information.

Corral of Westerners – Local group of western history buffs meets at St. Timothy’s fellowship basement room, 52 Soledad in Monterey on the second Monday each month to hear a speaker on topics of history in the west, with emphasis on our local area.  $2.00/meeting (annual dues $20).  Refreshments served. 

Gentrain Society is an organization for life-long learners.  They generally meet the first and third Wednesdays from 1:30-2:30 at the Monterey Peninsula College Lecture Forum #103.  Lectures are free and open to the public (except $3.00 parking fee).  Topics range from drama, history, and understanding civilizations and more.  Courses are also offered, along with trips organized for special events.  To see more information, visit gentrain.org.
