Experience the Merienda – Monterey’s extravagant celebration of the founding of our city, will be held on Saturday, June 3 this year and is always a spectacular event, usually sold out without being advertised to the public.  It is part pageant, part fiesta with mariachi music, dancers, and wonderful food.  Gari SouléI  and I are hosting a table of ten this year and have a few spots available we would like to use particularly for OTNA members who have never before attended.  Note that the price went up to $100 per ticket this year if you are a member of the Monterey History and Art or want to reimburse me to sit at our table, since I am a member.  It is normally $125.   I’ve attached the flyer with all the scrumptious details.    Please email oldtownneighborhood@gmail.com asap if you are interested in joining us.  -Nancy Soule’

Saturday, April 1, 2023, 2-4 pm “Through the Lens of Pat Hathaway” at Pacific Grove Art Center.  Presentation by James Perry, Executive Director, Monterey County Historical Society.  Free. Reserve at brickman@brickmanmarketing.com or 831-594-1500. 

Saturdays, April 1, 8, 15, 2023, 8-5 pm.   Free CERT class.  This class not only prepares you to help your family plan for emergencies, it teaches basic safety lessons and structure if you want to help the Community Emergency Response Teams when they help search for lost vulnerable adults and children, help set up firefighter rehabilitation centers, or help keep the public safe during emergencies, which frees up first responders to do their important work.    Email training@montereycert.org to participate.

Saturday, April 8, 2023 -9 am and 10:30 amFree Tours of the Pacific Biological Laboratory, 800 Cannery Row.    Lab docents share the role this lab played in the life of marine biologist Ed Ricketts and his friendship with author John Steinbeck, their circle of friends, and the PBL Members who bought the lab and founded the Monterey Jazz Festival. Saturday, April 8, 2023, 1-2:30 – “Spring Fling” Dance Center Musical Theater performance in front of the Rockfish Harbor Grill.  Free.

Sunday, April 9, 2023 1-7 pm – Visit the Easter Bunny and enjoy decorations on the wharf.   Great photo ops.  Vendors offer special Easter items.

Wednesday, April 12, 6 pm – Community Meeting on the Affordable Housing Project proposed by Mid-Pen Housing for Van Buren and Madison.   Held at the Mid-Pen Senior Project, 669 Van Buren.  This is your opportunity for an advance look at plans and to give valuable feedback in the early stages. 

Saturday, April 15, 10:30 am Bocce by the Bay – Join neighbors from Old Town in this friendly game at the bocce courts off Custom House Plaza.   We’ll bring some snacks and equipment.  Just come for a lot of fun and camaraderie.   Free.  No RSVP needed.

Saturday, April 15, 2023 12-4 pm – Monterey Museum of Art Block Party.  A free event for the family involving creating art at MMA Pacific Street.   In addition, an evening dance party for adults over 21 costs $25 and helps raise funds for the museum.

Saturday, April 15, 10-4 pm Jo Mora Day – Free walking tours and driving guides to see art work by Jo Mora, famous muralist, cartographer, and sculptor whose work is on display at Casa Serrano, Mayo Hayes O’Donnell Library, Doud House, Stanton Center and the Pacific House, as well as other locations on the peninsula.  Stop by these locations for more information, sponsored by Monterey History and Art Association.
