Saturday, November 20, 2021, 5-7 pm. Tree Lighting Ceremony at the Del Monte Shopping Center. Music, free cocoa, cookies, and reindeer antlers for the kids. Donate 3 cans of food for the chance to win a $100 Del Monte Gift Card.
Friday, November 26, 2021 5-7 pm Tree Lighting on Cannery Row- Enjoy the music, decorations, and fun on Steinbeck Plaza, Cannery Row with the annual tree lighting (5:45) and arrival of Santa on the balcony. Free and fun for the family.
Wednesday, December 1, 2021 – Reservations for our Membership Appreciation Evening at the Perry House begins. As this event will have limited capacity and often “sells out”, please make your reservation early. Guests of members ($5 each) may be on waiting list for availability after December 21, with priority to Old Town potential members. We also will need volunteers to help with check-in for a 30-minute shift (a nice way to meet new neighbors!). Visit our historic adobes decorated for the season and hear the rich history of these earliest buildings. Friday, December 31, 2021 3-Midnight – First Night Monterey 2022– Celebrate New Years Eve in historic downtown Monterey with over 50 performances both inside and out at this safe and family oriented event. Events start at 3 pm at Colton Hall lawn with free art and fun for youth and young at heart, followed by the Twilight Procession. Advance purchase of a button and proof of vaccination or negative covid test with ID required for the indoor performances, culminating in the Midnight Finale Performance. Buttons are your admission and can be purchased at Safeway stores through December or online at www.firstnightmonterey.org. with pick up at three downtown locations. Adults $29 ($22 with discount); Youth 6-15 $18 ($12 with discount), 5 and under free. Family packages (2 adults and 2 youth) $86 ($56 with discount). More info at www.firstnightmonterey.org.
SAVE THE DATE- Wednesday, January 12, 2022 5:30-7:30– Old Town Neighborhood Association’s Member Appreciation Evening in the Garden at the Perry House returns to celebrate the New Year! Wine, beer, non-alcoholic beverages and heavy hors d’oeuvres are elegantly provided by Events by Classic caterers at this beautiful historic mansion located at 201 Van Buren Street. This member’s-only event is for OTNA member adults bringing proof of covid vaccinations or a negative covid test within 72 hours and is free to members paid for 2022. As of this writing, we expect to have access indoors with masks unless eating, as well as access to the garden, terraces and beautiful carriage house. To join or renew your membership, please see details at the bottom of this email. Dues paid after July 1, 2021 will cover through the following calendar year (2022), and make you eligible to reserve your place when reservations open in December (this event often “sells out” to members prior to being able to open it for guests) and is first-come, first-served due to limited capacity at the venue.

Stokes Adobe Restaurant Opens! After new owners completely renovated this historic adobe at 500 Hartnell (corner of Hartnell and Polk), the new restaurant has finally opened, appropriately named Stokes Adobe! Currently open Thurs-Saturday evenings. More info at stokesadobe.com.
Undergrounding Committee Seeks Interested Residents -Our Old Town Neighborhood Undergrounding Committee is working jointly with interested residents of Monterey Vista and New Monterey Neighborhoods to work on a plan to underground utilities. You can contact Suzie Grimes at suziegrimes@juno.com with your ideas and to become part of this committee.
Teen Art and Writing Contest – Teens in grades 7-12 (age 13 and up) are invited to enter and win one of the 2022 Scholastic Art and Writing awards. To enter, go to https://www.artandwriting.org, and submit your work by Friday, December 10, at 8:59 pm. Once awards are determined, there will be a ceremony and exhibition of the winners from the California Central Coast Art Region at the Pacific Grove Art Center. Last year there were over 800 winners from this region.
Robert Louis Stevenson House Reopens – Now open Saturdays 10am-4pm. Stop by the house at 530 Houston Street to see a wonderful collection of artifacts from Robert Louis Stevenson and explore the building where he resided in the latter part 1879. Admission is free. 45 minutes tours are now given Thursday through Sunday mornings at 10 am by the State Parks for a $10 fee Pay at the door.
Larkin House Tours Now Offered – The California State Parks now offers 45-minute tours of the Larkin House at 2 pm Thursday through Sundays for a cost of $10 payable at the door..
The Cooper-Molera Adobe Museum is Reopened! Hours will be Saturday and Sundays 10-4 pm. Admission is free. Face masks are required. The museum is self-guided but a volunteer docent guide will be available on Saturdays, 11am-3 pm.
Monterey County Theater Alliance – The Monterey County Theater Alliance has been providing us many interesting theatrical presentations over zoom. For an ongoing schedule for these events, usually free and on zoom, visit admin@theatremonterey.org. Free theatrical presentations on topics of local history will usually show also under events. Thank you, MCTA, for offering us so many interesting topics during the covid time of sheltering in place!
