Members enjoyed pizza, Caesar salad, chips with guacamole, salsa and veggie dips, wine, beer, and delicious chocolate chip cookies courtesy of Events by Classic Catering at the Perry House on January 12th. Heaters, party lights, candles and starlight gave a festive atmosphere. A special highlight was a first peek at our new website, developed by our own Max Troyer, who displayed it in the carriage house. Here are some photos of the event.

Fisherman’s Wharf “Heart to Heart” Valentines Contest- Submit a photo during February taken at the wharf showing a red heart held along with a four-line Valentine’s poem to info@montereywharf.com. The three winning poems will be read on David Marzetti’s “Sundays with Sinatra” radio program on KMBY 1240am/95.9FM. Include a one-sentence photo caption, your name, address, email and phone number, and indicate whether the photo can be used on the Wharf’s social media, along with photo credit (who took the photo and what it describes). The subject line of the email should state “Wharf Heart to Heart Photo and Poem Contest Entry”. Prizes up to $100 in Wharf Dollars. More details at montereywharf.com.
Stefani Esta Art Exhibit at MMA Old Town artist and sculptor Stafani Esta has a featured exhibit at Monterey Museum of Art at 559 Pacific Street through March 26, 2022. “Currents and FLUX” presents a range of media, styles and genres. Two of her sculptures are in the adjacent park.
Annual History Slam Accepting submissions. – The annual history slam will be held on May 7, and will feature presentation on local historical topics by citizens who speak for 10-15 minutes via zoom. For information or to submit a short description, contact Sean Briscoe at briscoe@monterey.org by April 1. Participants selected will be notified by April 7. There is also a Student History Slam, which will be on April 30 for middle and high school students. Wine, beer, non-alcoholic beverages and heavy hors d’oeuvres are elegantly provided by Events by Classic caterers at this beautiful historic mansion located at 201 Van Buren Street. This free event is for adult OTNA member paid for 2022bringing proof of covid vaccinations or a negative covid test within 72 hours. WE ARE REQUIRING MASKS TO BE WORN AT CHECK IN AND WHEN INSIDE AT ALL TIMES, however members will have access to eat in the garden which has heaters, by the fire pit, and along the terraces without masks. Please dress accordingly. Free rapid covid testing may be done at Peets coffee in the Portola Hotel and Plaza, Tues-Sat 7 am to 4 pm (closed Sun/Mon). Friday, December 31, 2021 3-Midnight – First Night Monterey 2022– Celebrate New Years Eve in historic downtown Monterey with over 50 performances both inside and out at this safe and family oriented event. Events start at 3 pm at Colton Hall lawn with free art and fun for youth and young at heart, followed by the Twilight Procession. Advance purchase of a button and proof of vaccination or negative covid test with ID required for the indoor performances, culminating in the Midnight Finale Performance. Friday, December 31, 6 pm-7:15- Monterey County Pops! Free Concert at the Golden State Theater sponsored by Old Monterey Foundation. Celebrate Monterey’s 250th Birthday postponed from 2020. Mayor Clyde Roberson and other dignitaries will open, and there will be birthday cake as well as a fabulous concert, part of the First Night celebration downtown. Doors open at 5:30. First come, first in.
Wednesday, January 12, 2022, 5:30-7:30– Old Town Neighborhood Association’s Member Appreciation Evening in the Garden at the Perry House returns to celebrate the New Year! Wine, beer, non-alcoholic beverages and heavy hors d’oeuvres are elegantly provided by Events by Classic caterers at this beautiful historic mansion located at 201 Van Buren Street. This free event is for adult OTNA member paid for 2022 bringing proof of covid vaccinations or a negative covid test within 72 hours. As of this writing, we expect to have access indoors with masks unless eating, as well as access to the garden, terraces and beautiful carriage house. To join or renew your membership, please see details at the bottom of this email. Dues paid now will cover through the following calendar year (2022), and make you eligible to reserve your place, as there are very limited spaces left. We expect to be on a waiting list only basis soon. Thanks to all who have volunteered to help at check-in. We don’t expect to need further volunteers. Monterey County Theater Alliance – The Monterey County Theater Alliance has been providing us many interesting theatrical presentations over zoom. For an ongoing schedule for these events, usually free and on zoom, visit admin@theatremonterey.org. Free theatrical presentations on topics of local history will usually show also under events. As this event will have limited capacity and often “sells out”, please make your reservation early. Guests of members ($5 each) may be on waiting list for availability after December 21, with priority to Old Town potential members. We also will need volunteers to help with check-in for a 30-minute shift (a nice way to meet new neighbors!). Teen Art and Writing Contest – Teens in grades 7-12 (age 13 and up) are invited to enter and win one of the 2022 Scholastic Art and Writing awards. To enter, go to https://www.artandwriting.org, and submit your work by Friday, December 10, at 8:59 pm. Once awards are determined, there will be a ceremony and exhibition of the winners from the California Central Coast Art Region at the Pacific Grove Art Center. Last year there were over 800 winners from this region.
Robert Louis Stevenson House Reopens – Now open Saturdays 10am-4pm. Stop by the house at 530 Houston Street to see a wonderful collection of artifacts from Robert Louis Stevenson and explore the building where he resided in the latter part 1879. Admission is free. 45 minutes tours are now given Thursday through Sunday mornings at 10 am by the State Parks for a $10 fee Pay at the door.
Larkin House Tours Now Offered – The California State Parks now offers 45-minute tours of the Larkin House at 2 pm Thursday through Sundays for a cost of $10 payable at the door..
The Cooper-Molera Adobe Museum is Reopened! Hours will be Saturday and Sundays 10-4 pm. Admission is free. Face masks are required. The museum is self-guided but a volunteer docent guide will be available on Saturdays, 11am-3 pm.
