Tuesday, March 18, 2025, 7 pm City Council Meeting to Introduce Changes to the Rental Registry. Saturday, March 22, 2025, 8-noon – Mass Casualty Drill at Monterey Airport is scheduled.  Please note that the Community Emergency Response Team, as well as multiple regional emergency services will be responding to the Monterey Airport as part of a simulation of response to the possibility of a two-plane crash at the airport.   Please note this is only a DRILL.  Expect to see significant emergency vehicles in that area.

Sunday, March 30, 10 am -2 pm Monterey Firefighters Foundation Annual Kids Hero Run at the Custom House Plaza by Fisherman’s Wharf.  Families with children ages 2-17 are invited to come dressed as your favorite superhero to run through a series of inflatable obstacle courses.  One is 135 feet long!  The first 200 kids will receive a FREE superhero cape and gold medal after completing the course.  This FREE event for the public is made possible by the success of last year’s Firefighter Charity Ball and is sponsored by this organization.

Saturday, April 5, 11-4 pm – Monterey Museum of Art Block Party – Calle Principal will be closed off for a day of fun, music, art and crafts.  Free and fun for all ages.

Saturday, April 5, 3-5pm – Artist Reception for Gordon Mayfield’s “Soulscapes” exhibition during April at Venture Gallery, 260 Alvarado Street (at the Portola Hotel).   See his beautiful watercolors of Big Sur Coast and wilderness.   The reception is free.

Old Town Neighborhood Association Meeting Speaker and Elections– At our March 12 meeting, residents heard from Mayor Tyller Williamson, who reviewed the housing plan, rental registry (next week council meeting will present two changes) and rental assistance (being renewed), water (Pure Water Monterey expansion due in October 2025 he believes is sufficient for future housing needs), and clarified e-bike regulations.  He also discussed parking regulations, and other topics.    Seven directors were elected to serve for one year, and they voted on officers for the term.  In alphabetical order they are:  Corey Brunson (Vice President), Phyllis Bussey (our social co-chair), Mary Grove (Treasurer), Susan Ricketson (our NCIP rep), Gari Soule’ (President), Nancy Soule (Secretary), and Max Troyer (our webmaster).

WHALEFEST VOLUNTEERS NEEDED – April 12 and 13, 10-5 pm-  Whether a seasoned volunteer or new to the event, volunteers are needed to assist with arts and crafts, photo ops with marine mammal costume ambassadors, merchandise booths, survey teams and more.   Sign up at https://signup.zone/whalefest-monterey.  Lunch vouchers are given for those who volunteer for 4 or more hours.   This qualifies for students needing volunteer hours.

Merienda Tickets are on sale for members of Monterey History and Art Association.  This special festival on Saturday, June 7 from 11:15-3pm celebrates the founding of Monterey and is the highlight of the Monterey social calendar.  Held in the beautiful memory gardens behind the Pacific House off Custom House Plaza, guests enjoy pageantry, folklorico dancing, mariachis, music and an abundant, fiesta barbecue buffet with meats of all kinds, fabulous sides, wine, beer, cake, all prepared by the city’s finest chefs.  As it normally sells out, tickets are only available to members of MHAA until April 1 at a cost of $100 (plus $50 to join, if applicable).  After April 1, tickets, if available, cost $125 for non MHAA members.  For more information or to get tickets, go to montereyhistory.org.  If you would like to sit at one of two Old Town member tables, ask for this on your reservation form and send us an email reply to this bulletin.

Free Wharf Walks by Maritime Historian Tim Thomas the first Saturday of every month from 10am to noon.  Hear and experience a two hour cultural maritime history tour, with themes changing monthly.  Meet at the head of Old Fisherman’s Wharf near the pink Harbor House store. Free, but advance reservations are required and can be made at monterey.gov/library/events or by calling 831-646-3933.  This tour is recommended for ages 10 and up with a maximum group of 15 people.

The Presidio Museum of Monterey is open Saturdays and Sundays 10-4 pm – Learn the fascinating history of our Presidio, including the early indigenous settlers, the founding of the fort, the history during three wars, and the history of the Buffalo Soldiers. An interpretive walk with great views of the bay lead up to the Sloat Monument.  You can take a short cut from Van Buren over the creek bridge to reach it from Old Town.  Free.   Please consider volunteering as a docent for this great museum!

Second Saturdays, 9-10 and 10:30-11:30 am- Tours of Ed Ricketts Pacific Biological Laboratory   subject to availability.   “Doc Ricketts” was featured prominently in John Steinbeck’s novels about Cannery Row, and the lab at 600 Cannery Row was the site where the idea of a Monterey Jazz festival was born.   Tours are free, but limited in size.   As waiting lists fill quickly, this item is listed as announcements so you can reserve in advance at monterey.gov/library/events.  You are also welcome to drop by without a reservation to self-tour this historic site from 12-4 pm on the second Saturday.

Casa Serano, the historic adobe at 412 Pacific Street, is now open for free visits on Saturday and Sunday 2-4 pm.  Docents can help you learn the interesting history of this adobe built in 1843, as you peruse the art and furnishings.

American Association of University Women – This national organization promotes equity for women in the workplace and in education.  In addition to supporting  education through scholarships, they have book clubs, social events, monthly speakers, a Romancing the Coast monthly adventure, a hiking/walking group, and other interesting events.   See http://mpb-ca.aauw.net for more information. 

Monterey Civic Club – Founded in 1906, the club owns and meets monthly at the House of the Four Winds, located at 540 Calle Principal. This beautiful and historic adobe is believed to be the oldest women’s clubhouse in continuous use in the United States.  Members meet the first Tuesday of each month for lunch and a social program ($25), often with a speaker of importance to members.  Contact (831) 747-1072 for more information.

Gentrain Society is an organization for life-long learners.  They generally meet the first and third Wednesdays from 1:30-2:30 at the Monterey Peninsula College Lecture Forum #103.  Lectures are free and open to the public (except $3.00 parking fee).  Topics range from drama, history, and understanding civilizations and more.  Courses are also offered, along with trips organized for special events.

Native Daughters of the Golden West – founded in 1880s, for women born in California.  The Monterey Junipero Parlor No 141 meets at 6:30 pm in the Casa Serrano on the second Monday of each month.  An added benefit is that members can stay at the NDGW home designed by Julia Morgan on Baker Street in San Francisco.  For more information, call or text Jerilynn Crivello at 831-320-2080.

Saturday, March 15, 2025, 6-8:30 pm – “Tales from the Western Flyer-Stories, Legends and the Voyage Ahead” at the Stanton Center, 5 Custom House Plaza, Monterey.  The event celebrates the expedition that Doc Ricketts and John Steinbeck immortalized 85 years ago.  It includes drinks, appetizers, and access to the Stanton Center’s “Steinbeck in Monterey and Bounty of the Sea” exhibits. Tickets  ($30) are required and available at www.westernflyer.org/events/.   Among speakers are Susan Schillinglaw, professor and expert on all things John Steinbeck.   We encourage you to dine at local restaurants.  The Old Fisherman’s Grotto is serving up a taste of Steinbeck—sip on a Jack Rose Cocktail, his drink of choice, and dig into Steinbeck’s Posole, a humble recipe with a delicious twist from Chef Juan Ponce.

Sunday, March 16, 2025, 11-3 pm  Free Community Celebration of the Western Flyer’s Historic Return to the Gulf of California and Sendoff from the Old Fisherman’s Wharf.  Sunday’s continuance of the celebration includes live music and dancing, with Ballet Folklorico, swing dancers, jazz, and rollicking sea shanties by the Fishwives.  There will also be a 1940’s costume contest, where you can strike a pose with “Ed Ricketts” and win prizes, hands-on science and art activities for kids and adults, and limited edition commemorative T-Shirts and merchandise for sale. Saturday, March 15, 2025, 6-8:30 pm – “Tales from the Western Flyer-Stories, Legends and the Voyage Ahead” at the Stanton Center, 5 Custom House Plaza, Monterey.  The event celebrates the expedition that Doc Ricketts and John Steinbeck immortalized 85 years ago.  It includes drinks, appetizers, and access to the Stanton Center’s “Steinbeck in Monterey and Bounty of the Sea” exhibits. Tickets  ($30) are required and available at www.westernflyer.org/events/.   Among speakers are Susan Schillinglaw, professor and expert on all things John Steinbeck.

Sunday, March 16, 2025, 11-3 pm  Free Community Celebration of the Western Flyer’s Historic Return to the Gulf of California and Sendoff from the Old Fisherman’s Wharf.  Sunday’s continuance of the celebration includes live music and dancing, with Ballet Folklorico, swing dancers, jazz, and rollicking sea shanties by the Fishwives.  There will also be a 1940’s costume contest, where you can strike a pose with “Ed Ricketts” and win prizes, hands-on science and art activities for kids and adults, and limited edition commemorative T-Shirts and merchandise for sale. Free Wharf Walks by Maritime Historian Tim Thomas the first Saturday of every month from 10am to noon.  Hear and experience a two hour cultural maritime history tour, with themes changing monthly.  Meet at the head of Old Fisherman’s Wharf near the pink Harbor House store. Free, but advance reservations are required and can be made at monterey.gov/library/events or by calling 831-646-3933.  This tour is recommended for ages 10 and up with a maximum group of 15 people.

The Presidio Museum of Monterey is open Saturdays and Sundays 10-4 pm – Learn the fascinating history of our Presidio, including the early indigenous settlers, the founding of the fort, the history during three wars, and the history of the Buffalo Soldiers. An interpretive walk with great views of the bay lead up to the Sloat Monument.  You can take a short cut from Van Buren over the creek bridge to reach it from Old Town.  Free.   Please consider volunteering as a docent for this great museum!

Second Saturdays, 9-10 and 10:30-11:30 am- Tours of Ed Ricketts Pacific Biological Laboratory   subject to availability.   “Doc Ricketts” was featured prominently in John Steinbeck’s novels about Cannery Row, and the lab at 600 Cannery Row was the site where the idea of a Monterey Jazz festival was born.   Tours are free, but limited in size.   As waiting lists fill quickly, this item is listed as announcements so you can reserve in advance at monterey.gov/library/events.  You are also welcome to drop by without a reservation to self-tour this historic site from 12-4 pm on the second Saturday.

Casa Serano, the historic adobe at 412 Pacific Street, is now open for free visits on Saturday and Sunday 2-4 pm.  Docents can help you learn the interesting history of this adobe built in 1843, as you peruse the art and furnishings.

American Association of University Women – This national organization promotes equity for women in the workplace and in education.  In addition to supporting  education through scholarships, they have book clubs, social events, monthly speakers, a Romancing the Coast monthly adventure, a hiking/walking group, and other interesting events.   See http://mpb-ca.aauw.net for more information. 

Monterey Civic Club – Founded in 1906, the club owns and meets monthly at the House of the Four Winds, located at 540 Calle Principal. This beautiful and historic adobe is believed to be the oldest women’s clubhouse in continuous use in the United States.  Members meet the first Tuesday of each month for lunch and a social program ($25), often with a speaker of importance to members.  Contact (831) 747-1072 for more information.

Gentrain Society is an organization for life-long learners.  They generally meet the first and third Wednesdays from 1:30-2:30 at the Monterey Peninsula College Lecture Forum #103.  Lectures are free and open to the public (except $3.00 parking fee).  Topics range from drama, history, and understanding civilizations and more.  Courses are also offered, along with trips organized for special events.

Native Daughters of the Golden West – founded in 1880s, for women born in California.  The Monterey Junipero Parlor No 141 meets at 6:30 pm in the Casa Serrano on the second Monday of each month.  An added benefit is that members can stay at the NDGW home designed by Julia Morgan on Baker Street in San Francisco.  For more information, call or text Jerilynn Crivello at 831-320-2080.

Saturday, March 1, 2025, 3-5 pm Artist Reception at the Venture Gallery, 260 Alvarado St (Portola Hotel).  Noriko Yoshikawa-Constant is the featured artist for March and showcases her show “From the Kitchen to the Printmaker”, which conveys her energy, vibrancy and humor of life through depictions of dogs and cats, worked on Plexiglas and copper plates with oil-based etching ink.  Her work will be displayed throughout March.

Monterey Civic Club – Founded in 1906, the club owns and meets monthly at the House of the Four Winds, located at 540 Calle Principal. Friday, January 31, 2025 midnight – Deadline for Fisherman’s Wharf Contest Entries– “The Ode to Calamari” contest  in honor Fisherman’s Wharf celebration of 180 years ends Friday at midnight.  Entries of a four line poem expressing your love of calamari can be emailed to brickman@brickmanmarketing.com to be eligible for prizes of wharf dollars that can be spent at any establishment on Fisherman’s Wharf.  Entries will be judged on humor, creativity and originality and should be sent with the subject line “Ode to Calamari.  The entry should indicate whether their poem can be published on social media or in a future press release.  Winners will be announced by February 15.

January 13, 2025 Events Bulletin

Tuesday, January 14, 2025, 4 pm -5:30 Planning Commission Meeting.  One of the agenda items is for a use permit requested for a massage parlor upstairs from the former Ordway Drug Store at the corner of Alvarado and Pearl Streets.  At the request of one of our residents, this was discussed at our Old Town Neighborhood meeting last week.   This use permit would become the seventh massage parlor permit within a 500 ft radius of the proposed site, so would be an exception to the downtown specific plan goal of a wide mix of businesses.  It would operate daily, but close at 9 pm.  Residents may attend the meeting, submit comments to planninig@monterey.gov, view the meeting (but not participate) on youtube.com/cityofmonterey, or view on Channel 25.   You can view the city report at https://isearchmonterey.org/onbaseagendaonline/.

Friday, January 24, 2025, 5-8 pm- “Steinbeck in Monterey” Opening Night Reception.  Take a deep dive into John Steinbeck and Monterey with the 2025 exhibition opening January 24, 2025 at the Monterey History and Art Association at Stanton Center, 5 Custom House Plaza.  The city of Monterey was Steinbeck’s stomping ground through his childhood and into his thirties.  Here, he had some of the foundational experiences of his life that appear in his writing, again and again.  This exhibit explores the interplay between living and writing.  Get free tickets at https://steinbeck.org/event/ and click on Tickets.  You do not need to be a member of Monterey History and Art, simply click on free General Admission and request the number of tickets, subject to availability.

Gentrain Society is an organization for life-long learners.  They generally meet the first and third Wednesdays from 1:30-2:30 at the Monterey Peninsula College Lecture Forum #103.  Lectures are free and open to the public (except $3.00 parking fee).  Topics range from drama, history, and understanding civilizations and more.  Courses are also offered, along with trips organized for special events.  Note: Gentrain has arranged a special bus trip to tour the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento on October 27.  For more information, visit gentrain.org – Special events.

Monterey has a rich culture, including our annual First Night celebration.  We hope to see you there and at other events coming up:

Tuesday, December 31, 2024 – 3 pm to Midnight – First Night Monterey 2025 Celebration.   Nine hours of fabulous art, music, dance and fun for the entire family with over 60 performances at 15+ venues.  Free, crafts, art and music begins at 3 pm at Colton Hall Lawn.  A twilight procession will leave from there.   Music and entertainment continue up until midnight.  Indoor venues require an admission button, which are $31 for adults, $20 for youth 6-15.  Free for children five and under.   Purchase buttons at Safeway, Andronico’s, Grove Market, buy online, or at the event.  A free shuttle is available at Del Monte Center.   To purchase buttons, volunteer, get the event map or for more information, go to: https://www.firstnightmonterey.org

Saturday, January 4, 2025 2-4 pm – Jewelry Artist Reception at Venture Gallery, 260 Alvarado Street.  This January reception features three jewelry artists:  Lilly Campos creates mesmerizing fused glass with the colors of the sea; Vanessa Martin creates stunning modern and classic designs with pearls, gems, gold and silver: Sandra Saldivar creates dramatic yet classic designs with Austrian crystals, abalone, and gems.  Each artist creates necklaces, earrings, and bracelets that are delicious “eye candy”.  Visit the artists at this special reception and learn how the art is created, or stop by during January to see the special exhibit.

 Friday, January 10, 2025, 7-9 Reception for New Exhibits at Pacific Art Center, 568 Lighthouse Avenue, Pacific Grove.   Enjoy this first new exhibition of 2025 while listening to special music by Chris Gourley on guitar and Sandor Nagyszalanczy and Karen Lehman on ukulele and guitar.  Enjoy new exhibits: 

Elizabeth Murray’s “Rites of Nature-in Kinship with Trees” exhibit in the Gill Gallery shows this  bestselling author, gardener, and international teacher’s passion for nature in oil and watercoler; Oya Yilmaz Bolgun’s exhibit, “Layers of Existence” in the Dyke Gallery merges vibrant colors, bold shapes and intricate textures to create immersive experiences;  Yuliya Greben’s “Inner Universe” exhibit in the Annand Gallery features oil paintings with female figures representing our desire for a better life; PGHS Winter Exhibit “It’s Cool to be Square” in the Boyer Gallery by the advanced and AO art students of Pacific Grove High School, shows their creations on square wood panels; Monterey High School’s Arts-Media Performance Academy exhibits 32 artworks in the small halls that shows their range of skills. 

The reception is free, but donations are greatly appreciated.  The new exhibits can be viewed through February, Wednesday-Fridays, noon to 5 pm and Saturdays noon to 4 pm

November 22-January 5 – Ice Skating by the Bay returns to Custom House Plaza.  $15 plus $5 skate rental

Free Wharf Walks by Maritime Historian Tim Thomas the first Saturday of every month from 10am to noon.  Hear and experience a two hour cultural maritime history tour, with themes changing monthly.  Meet at the head of Old Fisherman’s Wharf near the pink Harbor House store. Free, but advance reservations are required and can be made by contacting Tim Thomas at 831-521-3304 or by email at timsardine@yahoo.com.  Participants must be 10 and above with a maximum group of 15 people. 

Christmas on the Wharf– See dazzling decorations and enjoy free live entertainment weekends on the wharf throughout December until January 2.  Santa visits Fridays, December 6, 13, and 20 from 5-9 pm, Saturdays, December 7, 14 and 21 from 11am-9 pm; and Sundays, December 8, 15, and 22 from 1-6 pm.  Special toy drive to benefit the Salvation Army.  More information and schedule of entertainment can be found on Montereywharf.com.

Monterey Museum of Art, 559 Pacific Street, offers free admission the entire month of December!

The Presidio Museum of Monterey is open Saturdays and Sundays 10-4 pm – Learn the fascinating history of our Presidio, including the early indigenous settlers, the founding of the fort, the history during three wars, and the history of the Buffalo Soldiers. An interpretive walk with great views of the bay lead up to the Sloat Monument.  You can take a short cut from Van Buren over the creek bridge to reach it from Old Town.  Free.

Second Saturdays, 9-10 and 10:30-11:30 am- Tours of Ed Ricketts Pacific Biological Laboratory   subject to availability.   “Doc Ricketts” was featured prominently in John Steinbeck’s novels about Cannery Row, and the lab at 600 Cannery Row was the site where the idea of a Monterey Jazz festival was born.   Tours are free, but limited in size.   As waiting lists fill quickly, this item is listed as announcements so you can reserve in advance at this link:  https://montereypl.libcal.com/calendar/pbl?cid=15157&t=g&d=0000-00-00&cal=15157&inc=0.  You are also welcome to drop by without a reservation to self-tour this historic site from 12-4 pm on the second Saturday.

Casa Serano, the historic adobe at 412 Pacific Street, is now open for free visits on Saturday and Sunday 2-4 pm.  Docents can help you learn the interesting history of this adobe built in 1843, as you peruse the art and furnishings.

Monterey Civic Club – Founded in 1906, the club owns and meets monthly at the House of the Four Winds, located at 540 Calle Principal. This beautiful and historic adobe is believed to be the oldest women’s clubhouse in continuous use in the United States.  Members meet the first Tuesday of each month for lunch and a social program ($20), often with a speaker of importance to members.  Contact (831) 747-1072 for more information.

Thursday, December 5, 2024, 3:30 pm “Alice in Wonderland” free movie rated G at the Community Room of the Monterey Public Library.  Free popcorn and drink as you watch the movie of the story come to life on the screen.  

Thursday, December 5, 6-8 pm – Parade of Lights in downtown Pacific Grove along Lighthouse.  Hear holiday music as you watch this spectacle of lighted floats and performers.  Free.

Friday, December 6 and Saturday, December 7, 10-4 pm Holiday Book Sale at the Monterey Public Library.  Funds go to help the library.  Preview Reception Thursday, Dec 5, 5-7 pm.   Hardbacks $2, paperbacks $1.

Friday, December 6, 5-6 pm – Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony.  Enjoy hot cider and cookies as you sing with live musicians the songs of the season, anticipating the finale of the lighting of our tree at the Colton Hall lawn. Free.

Friday, December 6, 5-8 pm, First Friday at the Monterey Museum of Art, 559 Pacific Street – Enjoy free admission to the museum and the new interactive Illuminado Exhibit.  Refreshments may be purchased. Admission to the museum is free the entire month of December.
