Thursday, February 1, 2024, 6-8 pm – “Experience the Monterey Bay through the Eyes of Early California Artists” by co authors Dr. Cynthia Wagner Weick and Artist Joaquin Turner.   This free lecture with wine reception and book signing to follow will be held at the Irvine Auditorium, 499 Pierce Street, Monterey, and is sponsored by the Marcia DeVoe Fund of the Community Foundation.

Friday, February 2, 2024, 5-7 pm – First Friday at the Monterey Museum of Art, 559 Pacific Street. Enjoy free after-hours access to the museum for an evening of art, music, and community.

Saturday,  February 3, 2024 10-noon – Free Wharf Walk “History of the Abalone of the Monterey Bay”.  This walking tour of the wharf with Marine Historian Tim Thomas will enhance your knowledge of this historic area.  Advance reservations are required by calling Tim Thomas at (831) 521-3304 or via email timsardine@yahoo.com. The tour is for ages 10-adult only, with no more than 15 people. Tours start near the pink Harbor House on Fisherman’s Wharf.

Saturday, February 3, 2024 2-4 pm – Reception for Sachiko Yokota’s new exhibit “Enso (circular form) Zen” at Venture Gallery, Portola Hotel.  Free reception to view the artist’s ceramics and other household art items that express minimalism of Japanese aesthetics.   Exhibition through February 29, 10-6 pm.

Local Elections Clerks Needed.  The League of Women Voters have announced that volunteers are needed to be election clerks for the March 5th elections.  Mandatory training is given February 15th at 2 pm or 6 pm or February 16th at 10 am.   Call Pamela Stewart at 719-331-2214 if you can help. 

Monterey’s Rental Registry Opens.   Effective January 1, 2024, owners of rental property in Monterey must register their rental unit on the city’s new Rental Inventory Portal prior to March 1.  If an owner owns and manages three or less rental units in Monterey, an exemption may be requested, but filing for the exemption must also be done by March 1.  More information and the form to register can be found at https://monterey.org/residents/neighborhoods___housing/rental_inventory.php

American Association of University Women – This national organization promotes equity for women in the workplace and in education.  In addition to supporting  education through scholarships, they have book clubs, social events, monthly speakers, a Romancing the Coast monthly adventure, a hiking/walking group, and other interesting events.   See http://mpb-ca.aauw.net for more information. 

Monterey Civic Club – Founded in 1906, the club owns and meets monthly at the House of the Four Winds, located at 540 Calle Principal. This beautiful and historic adobe is believed to be the oldest women’s clubhouse in continuous use in the United States.  Members meet the first Tuesday of each month for lunch and a social program ($20), often with a speaker of importance to members.  Contact (831) 747-1072 for more information.

Corral of Westerners – Local group of western history buffs meets at St. Timothy’s fellowship basement room, 52 Soledad in Monterey on the second Monday each month to hear a speaker on topics of history in the west, with emphasis on our local area.  $2.00 (annual dues $20).  Refreshments served.

Friday, January 19, 5:30-6:30 – “Before They Vanish: Ethiopia’s Omo Valley” by explorer and award-winning author James Michael Dorsey, at the Community Room of the Monterey Public Library.  Hear the untold stories of one of rural Africa’s most isolated regions, with tribes that had no connections to the outside.  Free, but registration required at https://montereypl.libcal.com/event/11516110.

REMINDER: The Old Town Neighborhood Association meeting is TONIGHT

Wednesday, January 10, 2024 7 pm-8:30 – Old Town Neighborhood Association Meeting at the McKone Building of MIIS, 499 Pierce Street.   Old Town resident Bill Leone will present information on the Neighborhood Watch program, plus we will hear updates from committees, discuss NCIP proposals, and how to involve the city in making safe evacuation routes, fire safety, and preventing power outages.   In addition, if you are interested in serving on the board or on a committee, please let us know.  We will hold elections for our seven directors in March.   Please note that as of January 1, 2024, all memberships will remain at $20 per household and be for the calendar year, although residents can pay in advance.   Residents can view and participate in the meeting on Zoom at https://middlebury.zoom.us/j/95304056025?pwd=bGpnU21nUnhPUlVTTVNhVVZ1VjB2dz09

Saturday, January 13, 2024,  9 and 10:30 am – Free Tour of the Pacific Biological Laboratory, 800 Cannery Row.  The lab played a pivotal role in the life and work of marine biologist, Ed Ricketts, his friendship and collaboration with author John Steinbeck, their circle of friends, and the PBL Members who bought the Lab in the mid-1950’s and founded the Monterey Jazz Festival.  The tours are docent lead and last one hour.   Free, but donations are appreciated.  Tours are subject to space available, and requires registration at https://montereypl.libcal.com/event/11543228.

Saturday, December 2, 1 pm Santa arrives at the Wharf, disembarking from a Princess Monterey Whale Watching boat, and then will be on site at his Santa House near the Crab House with his elves from 1:15-5 pm.  A free candy cane will be given to the first 100 visitors to see Santa that day.  Santa will return on weekends on December 8-23.   Santa visits are free and provide great photo ops.  See announcements.

Friday, December 8 and Saturday, December 9, 10-4pm Holiday Book Sale at the Monterey Public Library.  Purchase gently used books at the sale which supports our library.

Friday December 8 and Saturday, December 9, 5-9 pm – Christmas in the Adobes.Visit our historic adobes open and decorated for the holidays. Sunday, November 5, 1-2:30 – “Frances Elkins: Visionary American Designer”, presented by Scott Powell at the Stanton Center Theater, 5 Custom House Plaza.  The author highlights the work of this innovative Interior designer who lived from 1887 to 1953, and is considered one of the best American designers of all time.  Scott Powell’s images will include many of her commissions on the Monterey Peninsula.  $20/ $10 for AIA members and students.   Refreshments and book signing following the presentation.
