URGENT NEED:  Christmas in the Adobes volunteers are needed at Colton Hall Friday and Saturday nights, December 8 and 9th. Free admission to the museum all month, as their gift to the community.  Experience the artist-commissioned trees that evolve with every visitor’s contribution.   The exhibit will continue Thurs-Sunday, 11-5, through December 22.  

Saturday, December 2, 10-noon – Free Wharf Walk.  This walking tour of the wharf will discuss “The History of Abalone in Monterey” with Marine Historian Tim Thomas.   Advance reservations are required by calling Tim Thomas at (831) 521-3304 or via email timsardine@yahoo.com. The tour is for ages 10-adult only, with no more than 15 people.  Tours start near the pink Harbor House on Fisherman’s Wharf. 

Saturday, December 2, 11 am Free Family Fun Day at the Monterey Museum of Art.  Make art and experience the exhibit.

Saturday, December 2, 1 pm Santa arrives at the Wharf, disembarking from a Princess Monterey Whale Watching boat, and then will be on site at his Santa House near the Crab House with his elves from 1:15-5 pm.  A free candy cane will be given to the first 100 visitors to see Santa that day.  Santa will return on weekends on December 8-23.   Santa visits are free and provide great photo ops.  See announcements.

Saturday, November 4, 2023, 11-4 – Celebration of the Western Flyer’s Return to Monterey Bay.  Festivities begin at 11:00 on Fisherman’s Wharf, with live music, science, and art activities.  At noon, a boat parade will lead the boat into the harbor.   Best dressed Boat Contest.  12:30 Welcoming at the California Dock.   Free tours 1-4 pm of the restored and historic Western Flyer, the boat sailed by Doc Ricketts and John Steinbeck to the Sea of Cortez.   In case of rain, festivities move to the Stanton Center.

Saturday, November 4, 2023, 2-4 pm Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting for Shuman HeartHouse, the first homeless shelter in Monterey for women and families, 600 E Franklin Street.   The public is invited to the celebration.   Free, but donations are appreciated.

Sunday, November 5, 1-2:30 – “Frances Elkins: Visionary American Designer”, presented by Scott Powell at the Stanton Center Theater, 5 Custom House Plaza.  The author highlights the work of this innovative Interior designer who lived from 1887 to 1953, and is considered one of the best American designers of all time.  Scott Powell’s images will include many of her commissions on the Monterey Peninsula.  $20/ $10 for AIA members and students.   Refreshments and book signing following the presentation.

Thursday,  November 16, 6 pm  Writer and Historian Talk by Claudine Chalmers regarding the creation of “The Barbizon of the Pacific”, a book she co-authored about the early days of Monterey’s Bohemian art colony with Jules Tavernier, Jules Simoneau and Robert Louis Stevenson.   The talk will be held at the Irvine Auditorium in the McKone Building of MIIS, 499 Pierce Street.  Wine reception to follow.

Sunday, October 8, 1-5 pm 178^th Birthday Celebration of the Monterey Wharf – Enjoy an afternoon of fun on the wharf with live music from the Money Band 1-4 pm, a birthday cake cut at 3:30 in front of Abalonettis, a meet and greet with Monterey Police and Fire 1-4 pm, and a commemoration of the Argentine pirate Bourchard who raided and occupied Monterey in 1818. Fun photo ops with storm troopers, pirate statues, and a costumed birthday cake.  NEW THIS YEAR: A special Wharf Birthday Party Candy Crawl on the Wharf – a free piece of candy at Candy World, Wharf Chocolate Factory and Carousel Candies for the first 178 attendees!   Dave Marzetti hosting as Master of Ceremonies.

Saturday, September 16, 8 am-2pm – Annual Sandcastle Building contest at Carmel Beach between  10^th and 12^th Avenue.  Building at 8 am; Judging at 12 noon.  Free.  The theme this year is “Time Travel Into the Future”.  Everyone who would like to build a castle can enter the contest by coming to the registration booth across from 11^th Avenue on the beach, and judges bestow awards for multiple categories, from the coveted Golden Shovel to the tongue-in cheek Sour Grapes.  Because bribery (non-monetary) is encouraged, it’s not unusual to see platters of food, bottles of wine, chair massages and other indulgences being offered to the people in charge.  For more information call Carmel Community Services at (831) 620-2020.

Saturday, September 16, 3-6 pm- Artist Reception at the Venture Gallery Meet September’s featured artist, Tamara Selyangina, and view her show “Beautiful Monterey Peninsula” which is on display the month of September, 10-6 daily (2-6 pm Tuesdays).  Venture Galleries is located in the Portola Hotel at 260 Alvarado Street.

Sunday, October 8, 1-5 pm 178^th Birthday Celebration of the Monterey Wharf – Enjoy an afternoon of fun on the wharf with live music from the Money Band 1-4 pm, a birthday cake cut at 3:30 in front of Abalonettis, a meet and greet with Monterey Police and Fire 1-4 pm, and a commemoration of the Argentine pirate Bourchard who raided and occupied Monterey in 1818. Fun photo ops with storm troopers, pirate statues, and a costumed birthday cake.  NEW THIS YEAR: A special Wharf Birthday Party Candy Crawl on the Wharf – a free piece of candy at Candy World, Wharf Chocolate Factory and Carousel Candies for the first 178 attendees!   Dave Marzetti hosting as Master of Ceremonies.

Saturday, October 14, 2023 10:30-12:00 noon.  Old Town plays Bocce by the Bay –  If you have come before, you know that we mean it when we say no experience is necessary.  The rules are simple and reviewed that morning.   We make up for skill with a great amount of enthusiasm and camaraderie.  Members rotate into teams so we play with others and get to know more about our neighbors.  Snacks and equipment are provided.  No RSVP necessary.   Meet at the bocce courts by the Custom House Plaza.

Wednesday, October 18, 7 pm Old Town Neighborhood Association Meeting at MIIS McKone Building Conference Room, 499 Pierce Street.   You may also participate on zoom (details to follow).  Our special guest will be PK Diffenbaugh, Superintendent of Monterey Peninsula Unified School District to discuss housing for teachers in the district.   The meeting is open to all residents of Old Town, regardless of membership.

The Neighborhood and School Collaborative (NSC) is a group of residents, Tom Newton (MHS Principal), and several members of the School Board trying to improve communications between neighborhood residents and the school district with a goal of avoiding further legal challenges and valuable school funding going to attorneys. The NSC believes that students are best served by residents working together with our schools and district leadership, as in “it takes a village.” One of NSC’s earlier successes was to replace the older outward facing night lights at MHS with more modern down-facing LED lighting with motion sensors, making it much more pleasant to surrounding neighbors.

The NSC organized a Public Outreach Meeting with high school and district leadership regarding the High School Field Improvement Project that took place on Thursday, September 7th, 5:30-7pm at MHS. You can see the NSC Mission Statement here.

Friday, September 8, 5:30 “Andrew Carnegie and his Legacy – LIVE!” presented by local actor Howard Burnham at the Pacific Grove Library, 550 Central Avenue, Pacific Grove.  Free and open to the public.  The Pacific Grove Library was built through funding by Andrew Carnegie, as was the building at 425 Van  Buren in Monterey (The Segal Building at MIIS).  No RSVP needed.

Friday, Sept 8, 3-9 pm, Saturday, Sept 9, 10-9 pm, and Sunday, Sept 10, 10-6 pm.- 90^th Festa Italia Celebration at Custom House Plaza.  Enjoy Italian music, dancing by the Tarantala dancers, bocce tournament, great Italian food, and craft vendors at this colorful free festival.  Friday’s dancing starts with the Money Band Friday evening from 6-9 pm.  Don’t miss the Blessing of the Fleet and the Walk on the wharf on Saturday morning beginning at 10 am.  This year there will also be a FREE cioppino cooking demonstration by award-winning chef Tene Shake Saturday at 1 pm in front of the Grotto/Foor Market Kokomos on the wharf.  Free copies of the recipe will be available.  Other entertainers include the Mike Marotta Band, Anna Marotta Halim, Anthony Lane Band and Pasquale Esposito.   For a full schedule, visit festaitaliamonterey.org.
