Saturday, January 22, 1-4 pm – Japanese American Heritage Center Reopening and Dedication of New Mural and Garden, 424 Adams Street (street across from Jack’s Park, perpendicular to entrance of Monterey Sports Center). This free community event will include the unveiling of a new mural by Pacific Grove native and muralist, Heather Seavey, daughter of historian Kent Seavey, the Japanese garden dedication, and self-guided tours of the museum.  Taiko drummers will perform at 1 pm.   Light refreshments will be served.  For more information, contact 831-648-8830 or info@jaclmonterey.org.

February 19, 2-4  pm – “A Local Treasure: Monterey County Historical Society” – at the Pacific Grove Art Center, 568 Lighthouse Avenue in Pacific Grove.  Presentation on the historical highlights of the county through eight decades, the purchase of the Boronda adobe, and the acquisition of 80,000 photos from Pat Hathaway’s collection.  Free refreshments, including Sicilian cookies from an historic recipe from Carmel Bakery, will be available after the presentation.  RSVP to wendybrickman@gmail.com or 831-633-4444.

Wednesday, January 12, 2022, 5:30-7:30– Old Town Neighborhood Association’s Member Appreciation Evening in the Garden at the Perry House returns to celebrate the New Year!   Wine, beer, non-alcoholic beverages and heavy hors d’oeuvres are elegantly provided by Events by Classic caterers at this beautiful historic mansion located at 201 Van Buren Street. This free event is for adult OTNA member paid for 2022bringing proof of covid vaccinations or a negative covid test within 72 hours.  WE ARE REQUIRING MASKS TO BE WORN AT CHECK IN AND WHEN INSIDE AT ALL TIMES, however members will have access to eat in the garden  which has heaters, by the fire pit, and along the terraces without masks.   Please dress accordingly.  Free rapid covid testing may be done at Peets coffee in the Portola Hotel and Plaza, Tues-Sat 7 am to 4 pm (closed Sun/Mon).  If you find you can no longer attend, please email to let us know.  Guests who have reservations should have received an email confirming the reservation and whether or not 2022 dues have been received or are to be paid at the door.  Volunteers should have received their assignment information by email.  If you have questions, please reply to the email.

Advance purchase of a button and proof of vaccination or negative covid test with ID required for the indoor performances, culminating in the Midnight Finale Performance.  Buttons are your admission and can be purchased at Safeway stores through December or online at www.firstnightmonterey.org. with pick up at three downtown locations. Adults $29 ($22 with discount); Youth 6-15 $18 ($12 with discount), 5 and under free.  Family packages (2 adults and 2 youth) $86 ($56 with discount). Free Concert at the Golden State Theater sponsored by Old Monterey Foundation.  Celebrate Monterey’s 250th Birthday postponed from 2020.  Mayor Clyde Roberson and other dignitaries will open, and there will be birthday cake as well as a fabulous concert, part of the First Night celebration downtown.  Doors open at 5:30. November 16-30 – Support the House of Four Winds Adobe – Online Auction Fundraiser. This fundraiser by the Monterey Civic Club offers many gift certificates for restaurants and adventures in Monterey that you can bid on by email, thanks to the local merchants that donated. November 19- Ice Skating Rink Opens at Custom House Plaza.. Mon -Sat 11am-10pm; Sunday 12-8pm. 13 year to adult: $15; Youth 12 and under $13.  Skate rental $5. 

Saturday, November 20, 2021, 5-7 pm. Tree Lighting Ceremony at the Del Monte Shopping Center. Music, free cocoa, cookies, and reindeer antlers for the kids. Donate 3 cans of food for the chance to win a $100 Del Monte Gift Card. 

Friday, November 26, 2021 5-7 pm Tree Lighting on Cannery Row-  Enjoy the music, decorations, and fun on Steinbeck Plaza, Cannery Row with the annual tree lighting (5:45) and arrival of Santa on the balcony.  Free and fun for the family. 

Wednesday, December 1, 2021 – Reservations for our Membership Appreciation Evening at the Perry House begins. As this event will have limited capacity and often “sells out”, please make your reservation early. Guests of members ($5 each) may be on waiting list for availability after December 21, with priority to Old Town potential members. We also will need volunteers to help with check-in for a 30-minute shift (a nice way to meet new neighbors!). Teen Art and Writing Contest   Teens in grades 7-12 (age 13 and up) are invited to enter and win one of the 2022 Scholastic Art and Writing awards.   To enter, go to https://www.artandwriting.org, and submit your work by Friday, December 10, at 8:59 pm.  Once awards are determined, there will be a ceremony and exhibition of the winners from the California Central Coast Art Region at the Pacific Grove Art Center.  Last year there were over 800 winners from this region. 

Robert Louis Stevenson House Reopens – Now open Saturdays 10am-4pm.  Stop by the house at 530 Houston Street to see a wonderful collection of artifacts from Robert Louis Stevenson and explore the building where he resided in the latter part 1879. Admission is free.  45 minutes tours are now given Thursday through Sunday mornings at 10 am by the State Parks for a $10 fee    Pay at the door.  

Larkin House Tours Now Offered – The California State Parks now offers 45-minute tours of the Larkin House at 2 pm Thursday through Sundays for a cost of $10 payable at the door.. 

The Cooper-Molera Adobe Museum is Reopened!  Hours will be Saturday and Sundays 10-4 pm.  Admission is free.  Face masks are required.  The museum is self-guided but a volunteer docent guide will be available on Saturdays, 11am-3 pm. 

Monterey County Theater Alliance – The Monterey County Theater Alliance has been providing us many interesting theatrical presentations over zoom.  For an ongoing schedule for these events, usually free and on zoom, visit admin@theatremonterey.org.    Free theatrical presentations on topics of local history will usually show also under events.    Thank you, MCTA, for offering us so many interesting topics during the covid time of sheltering in place!

September 22, 2021 Events Bulletin

Cannery Row Days is back via Zoom! This year’s Cannery Row celebration is from September 23-November 4th on Thursdays at 4 pm.  The festival hosts offerings revolving around Steinbeck’s novel “Sweet Thursday” which was later turned into the Broadway musical “Pipe Dream” by Rogers and Hammerstein in 1955.  The programs, inserted in chronological order, will explore Steinbeck’s novel Sweet Thursday, the history, music, natural environment, and the Broadway production.   This festival is sponsored by The Monterey Public Library, in partnership with Cannery Row Company, Western Flyer Foundation, and the Cannery Row Foundation.  Registration links are shown with each event.    Recordings of each of the programs will be on the Monterey Public Library’s You Tube channel.

Thursday, September 23, 4 pm “Steinbeck Rewrites Ed Ricketts”.  Cannery Row Days commences with author and Steinbeck expert Susan Shillinglaw exploring Steinbeck’s novel “Sweet Thursday” and the rewriting of Ed Ricketts throughout Steinbeck’s novels.   Free and on zoom, but registration required at https://montereypl.libcal.com/event/8276442

Sunday, September 26, 6 am to 12 noon: “Sunday with Sinatra & Friends Radio Show: Broadcast Live from Old Fisherman’s Wharf”.  Listen to this unique show hosted by David Marzetti on KMBY 1240 AM/95.9 FM, or streamed worldwide on the internet.  David plays the famous songs of Sinatra and friends as well as conducts short interviews with merchants of Old Fisherman’s Wharf and others. In addition, he will also talk about upcoming Wharf events and special promotions.

Monterey Locals Free Parking Program  -The Waterfront Parking Lot adjacent to Old Fisherman’s Wharf offers Monterey County residents with the 939 area code free two hours of parking Monday to Thursday when they patronize a wharf merchant and receive a parking validation sticker from the merchant.  The sticker is to be pasted onto the parking ticket before prepaying for your parking at one of the four pay stations. Please be sure to prepay for your parking before exiting the Waterfront Parking Lot.   There is a button to push on each Pay Station to connect you to someone who can answer any questions.

Last Chance Mercantile has reopened! Find, donate, or recycle unneeded construction materials, mulch, furniture, and household items at the Marina Last Chance Mercantile, part of the Monterey Regional Waste Management District, located at 14201 Del Monte Blvd, Marina.  Hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 9 am to 4 pm.

Saturday, September 18, 9-noon-   California Coastal Day Cleanup.  
 Meet at Del Monte Beach near the commercial wharf.  Also participate throughout the month by cleaning your neighborhoods, parks and other areas.   This keeps the bay clean and removing dry brush lessens wildfire fuel to keep us all safe.    

Saturday, September 18, 5:30 – “I Want to Make You Terribly Afraid: Hitch in America”.  In the second of a two-part Zoom series written and acted by Howard Burnham through MCTA, we learn about the director Alfred Hitchcock’s life and career in America.  Hitchcock, the “master of suspense”, filmed Vertigo in this area, with Kim Novak and Jimmy Stewart.  Q&A following the performance. Free but donations appreciated. Register here.

Bay View Academy Reopens – The Bay View Academy will be using Larkin Park from 8:15-3:15 on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, so during those hours it will be closed to the public.  On Wednesday the park will be open to the public from 1:15 pm.  Please give patience to the traffic management of arrivals and departures these first few weeks.  If you have any issues, you can contact Jennifer Baughn, principal of Bay View Academy, at 831-717-4630.
