Saturday, November 18, 2023, 2-4 pm Robert Louis Stevenson Happy Unbirthday Party at the Monterey Public Library Community Room.  Enjoy unbirthday cake, tea and a special presentation by author Claudine Chalmers discussing her new book, “Barbizon by the Pacific: The Early Days of Monterey’s Bohemian Art Colony with Jules Tavernier, Jules Simoneau and Robert Louis Stevenson”.  You can purchase books which the author will sign.  (Note: Robert Louis Stevenson famously “deeded” his birthday to a friend of his daughter, as her birthday had fallen on Christmas day, hence he has an unbirthday celebrated in his honor.   Free and no registration required.  

Saturday, November 18, 2023, 5-7pm – Christmas Tree Lighting at the Del Monte Shopping Center.   Enjoy refreshments, and kids receive free reindeer antlers while listening to live holiday music.  See Mr. and Mrs. Claus light the beautiful Christmas tree.  Free event.  You will have a chance to win one of three $100 Del Monte gift certificates if you bring three cans of food to donate to the Food Bank of Monterey County.   

Saturday, November 18, 2023, 6-8 pm. Artist Alexis Manheim Exhibition free reception at the Stanton Center.  The public is invited to the opening of this new exhibit, “A Complicated Reality”, that runs through January.

Thursday, November 30, 6 pm. “Kim Talks”- at Oscar’s Playground on Cannery Row.  Bring your thoughts and issues to discuss with Dr. Kim Barber, City Councilwoman for our district one.   Her guest will be Kate Daniels, Monterey County Planning Commissioner running for District 5 seat on the County Board of Supervisors. 

Friday, December 1, 5-6 pm – Monterey Holiday Tree Lighting at the Colton Hall lawn.  Enjoy cookies, cider, live music and caroling along with the lighting of our city tree. 

Friday, December 1, 5-8 pm – First Friday Iluminado Celebration at the Monterey Museum of Art,

Free admission to the museum all month, as their gift to the community.  Experience the artist-commissioned trees that evolve with every visitor’s contribution. 

Saturday, December 2, 11 am Free Family Fun Day at the Monterey Museum of Art.  Make art and experience the exhibit.

Sunday, December 3, 5:15-7pm – Holiday Lighted Boat Parade –  Enjoy seeing the parade of festively decorated boats as they leave from the harbor and slowly move toward the aquarium and back at this traditional holiday event.  Many of our restaurants are great viewing spots!

Friday, December 8 and Saturday, December 9, 10-4pm Holiday Book Sale at the Monterey Public Library.  Purchase gently used books at the sale which supports our library.

Friday December 8 and Saturday, December 9, 5-9 pm – Christmas in the Adobes.Visit our historic adobes open and decorated for the holidays. Enjoy music and a wide variety of entertainment at these cherished homes and buildings.   The newly renovated First Theater will be included for the first time in many years.  Tickets may be purchased either online at www.mshpa.org or at the Pacific House at Custom House plaza.  Adults 18 and over $25/$30 after Nov 1 for one night; $45 for both nights.  Children under 18 are free.

Friday, Dec 22, 2023, 5:30-7:30 pm – Winter Solstice Celebration at the Monterey Museum of Art.

Sunday, December 31, 3pm-Midnight – First Night Monterey– Join in the family-friendly celebration with over 50 performances, featuring dance, jazz, celtic, marimba, folk, and rock music at Golden State Theater, Conference Center, and other venues.   The music in the street is free, as are the art and events of Kids night out on the Colton Hall Lawn.  For access to the venues for special performances, a button must be purchased.  Early bird buttons purchased by 8 pm on December 10: Adults: $25, Kids 6-15: $15; Family of 2 adults+2 children: $75.  After 8 pm on December 10, prices are $32 for adults, $20 for children 6-15, $104 for family of 2 adults plus 2 children.  See firstnightmonterey.org to purchase buttons or for more information on performers and venues.    FREE buttons are earned with four volunteer hours.  See Announcements below. 

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Christmas on the Wharf– Enjoy the majestic tree, Santa’s cottage, holiday decorations and photo ops, plus musical and dance performances at various times four weekends in December:  Fridays, December 1, 8, 15, 22 from 5pm to 9 pm; Saturdays December 2, 9, 16, 23 11 am-9 pm; Sundays, December 3, 10, 17 from 1-8 pm.   Join in Community Caroling, coordinated by members of His Grace Ministries International Church, from 5-6:30 on these Sundays.

Volunteers Needed for First Night Monterey!  If you can help with four hours at set-up, clean up, various assignments, you will earn a FREE First Night Button to enjoy the additional five hours.  Contact firstnightmonterey.org to volunteer.

Tuesday, October 31, 2023, 4-7 pm – Halloween on the Wharf – Halloween Trick or Treat by the Bay and Costume Contest with Cash Prizes.   Come in costume for fun on the Old Fisherman’s Wharf.  Enjoy Halloween candy give-aways and photo ops with ghoulish caracters along the wharf while listening to the Halloween DJ play spooky Halloween music favorites.   Special costume contest at 5 pm with cash prizes for age groups under 8, 9-21 years, 22+ and groups of 3 or more.  Prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd in age categories are $100, $50 and $25 respectively.  Group of 3 or more 1st prize $150; 2nd $75, 3rd $50.

Saturday, November 4, 2023, 9:30-11:00 – Free Wharf Walk focusing on the Legendary Sardine Industry, lead by maritime historian Tim Thomas, hosted by Monterey’s Fisherman’s Wharf Association. Saturday, November 4, 2023, 11-4 – Celebration of the Western Flyer’s Return to Monterey Bay.  Festivities begin at 11:00 on Fisherman’s Wharf, with live music, science, and art activities.  At noon, a boat parade will lead the boat into the harbor.   Best dressed Boat Contest.  12:30 Welcoming at the California Dock.   Free tours 1-4 pm of the restored and historic Western Flyer, the boat sailed by Doc Ricketts and John Steinbeck to the Sea of Cortez.   In case of rain, festivities move to the Stanton Center.

Saturday, November 4, 2023, 2-4 pm Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting for Shuman HeartHouse, the first homeless shelter in Monterey for women and families, 600 E Franklin Street.   The public is invited to the celebration.   Free, but donations are appreciated.

Sunday, November 5, 1-2:30 – “Frances Elkins: Visionary American Designer”, presented by Scott Powell at the Stanton Center Theater, 5 Custom House Plaza.  The author highlights the work of this innovative Interior designer who lived from 1887 to 1953, and is considered one of the best American designers of all time.  Scott Powell’s images will include many of her commissions on the Monterey Peninsula.  $20/ $10 for AIA members and students.   Refreshments and book signing following the presentation.

Tuesday, November 7, 2-4 pm “That Pirate Bouchard” – Lecture by author William Briggs at the Casa Serano, sponsored by Monterey History and Art.  Free to members of MHAA.  $10 for non-members.

Wednesday, November 8, 3:30 pm.  Mural Dedication Ceremony and Celebration at Middlebury Institute of International Studies McKone Building, 499 Pierce Street.  3:30 Enjoy food and entertainment.  4:30 Unveiling with the Ohlone Sisters and Muralist Yermo Aranda.   Free and open to the public.  RSVP at go.MIIS.edu/celebration.  Co-sponsored by Middlebury Institute of International Studies and Old Monterey Foundation.

Thursday,  November 16, 6 pm  Writer and Historian Talk by Claudine Chalmers regarding the creation of “The Barbizon of the Pacific”, a book she co-authored about the early days of Monterey’s Bohemian art colony with Jules Tavernier, Jules Simoneau and Robert Louis Stevenson.   The talk will be held at the Irvine Auditorium in the McKone Building of MIIS, 499 Pierce Street.  Wine reception to follow.

Saturday, November 4, 2023 – Celebration of the Western Flyer’s Return to Monterey Bay.  Festivities begin at 11:00 on Fisherman’s Wharf, with live music, science, and art activities.  At noon, a boat parade will lead the boat into the harbor.  Free tours of the restored and historic Western Flyer, the boat sailed by Doc Ricketts and John Steinbeck to the Sea of Cortez, will be available from 2-4 pm.  Bring your

Fun photo ops with storm troopers, pirate statues, and a costumed birthday cake.  NEW THIS YEAR: A special Wharf Birthday Party Candy Crawl on the Wharf – a free piece of candy at Candy World, Wharf Chocolate Factory and Carousel Candies for the first 178 attendees!   Dave Marzetti hosting as Master of Ceremonies.

Saturday, September 16, 8 am-2pm – Annual Sandcastle Building contest at Carmel Beach between  10th and 12th Avenue.  Building at 8 am; Judging at 12 noon.  Free.  The theme this year is “Time Travel Into the Future”.  Everyone who would like to build a castle can enter the contest by coming to the registration booth across from 11th Avenue on the beach, and judges bestow awards for multiple categories, from the coveted Golden Shovel to the tongue-in cheek Sour Grapes.  Because bribery (non-monetary) is encouraged, it’s not unusual to see platters of food, bottles of wine, chair massages and other indulgences being offered to the people in charge.  For more information call Carmel Community Services at (831) 620-2020.

Old Town Special Bulletin: Aug 30 Meeting

There will be a special City Council meeting next Wednesday, August 30th, at 4pm to discuss the Madison Street Affordable Housing Development.  Mid-Pen Housing would love all of your support for the project, and they think the City Council would benefit greatly from hearing the community’s perspective.  Mid-Pen Housing will be discussing the site plan they presented at the community meeting and the next steps to work toward design and financing. Saturday, September 16, 8 am-2pm – Annual Sandcastle Building contest at Carmel Beach between  10th and 12th Avenue.  Building at 8 am; Judging at 12 noon.  Free.  The theme this year is “Time Travel Into the Future”.  Everyone who would like to build a castle can enter the contest by coming to the registration booth across from 11th Avenue on the beach, and judges bestow awards for multiple categories, from the coveted Golden Shovel to the tongue-in cheek Sour Grapes.  Because bribery (non-monetary) is encouraged, it’s not unusual to see platters of food, bottles of wine, chair massages and other indulgences being offered to the people in charge.  For more information call Carmel Community Services at (831) 620-2020.

Friday, August 4, 5-7 pm – First Friday at Monterey Museum of Art on Pacific Street, with extended hours and FREE access.  Enjoy an evening of art, music and community gathering.

Saturday, August 5, 10-12 noon.  FREE Wharf Walk with historian Tim Thomas.  The walk will focus on Abalone and the Japanese Fishermen of the Monterey Bay.  Free, but reservations required by calling Tim Thomas at 831-521-3304 or via emai at timsardine@yahoo.com.  Ages 10-adult, limited to first 15 people.

Saturday, August 5, 3-6 pm – Reception of new artists at Venture Gallery at the Portola Hotel.  See the new exhibits and meet Craig Lauterbach (wood scuptures), Sarah Leonard (Coastal oil paintings), and Dee Steiner (romantic oil paintings of park, trails and sunsets in impressionistic style) at this artist reception.  The show runs August 1-31.  Free.

Friday, August 11, 5-7 pm – Monterey Kick-Off Cruise in of Historic Racing Cars are on exhibit in the 300 block of Alvarado Street (Del Monte corner) in Monterey at this free event.   There is also a Driver’s Reception at Cibo’s Restaurant open to the public from 5-7 pm with complimentary appetizers and live jazz starting at 5:30. 

Wednesday, August 16, 12-5 pm – Little Car Show in downtown Pacific Grove on Lighthouse Avenue.  View 100 miniature cars with parade and tour around the coastline starting at 5 pm.   Free event.

Thursday, August 17, 7 am- 12 noon- Tours d’Elegance -Catch a glimpse of cars that will compete in the Concours d’Elegance as they tour from Pebble Beach around the peninsula and return to Pebble Beach.  

Thursday, August 17, 11am-4 pm – Prancing Ponies- on Ocean Avenue in Carmel.  See women-owned exotic, classic, muscle, sports, and electric cars at this free event.  Fashion show featuring local models and designers.  Awards for best presentation at 4 pm.

Friday, August 18, 12 noon – 6 pm- Pacific Grove Rotary Councours Auto Rally- View vintage cars on display at Lighthouse and Forest in downtown Pacific Grove.  Best in class will be awarded at 4 pm.  Parade of the cars and rally begin at 5 pm, with cars touring the shoreline from Lovers Point to Asilomar and returning at 6 pm.  Free.

Saturday, August 19, 1-6 pm – Exotics on Broadway (formerly at Cannery Row) – View super, hyper and exotic cars at this free event on General Jim Moore Boulevard between Broadway and San Pablo Ave in Seaside. 

Saturday, August 19, 8 am -1:30 pm Concours d’Lemons – See the ugly rust buckets and misfits of the car world at this hilarious free event at Seaside City Hall, 440 Hartcourt Avenue in Seaside.   Thrift store trophies will be awarded for worst in class, with judges openly available for bribes.
