Sunday, October 8, 1-5 pm 178th Birthday Celebration of the Monterey Wharf – Enjoy an afternoon of fun on the wharf with live music from the Money Band 1-4 pm, a birthday cake cut at 3:30 in front of Abalonettis, a meet and greet with Monterey Police and Fire 1-4 pm, and a commemoration of the Argentine pirate Bourchard who raided and occupied Monterey in 1818. Fun photo ops with storm troopers, pirate statues, and a costumed birthday cake.  NEW THIS YEAR: A special Wharf Birthday Party Candy Crawl on the Wharf – a free piece of candy at Candy World, Wharf Chocolate Factory and Carousel Candies for the first 178 attendees!   Dave Marzetti hosting as Master of Ceremonies.

Saturday, October 14, 2023 10:30-12:00 noon.  Old Town plays Bocce by the Bay –  If you have come before, you know that we mean it when we say no experience is necessary.  The rules are simple and reviewed that morning.   We make up for skill with a great amount of enthusiasm and camaraderie.  Members rotate into teams so we play with others and get to know more about our neighbors.  Snacks and equipment are provided.  No RSVP necessary.   Meet at the bocce courts by the Custom House Plaza.

Wednesday, October 18, 7 pm Old Town Neighborhood Association Meeting at MIIS McKone Building Conference Room, 499 Pierce Street.   You may also participate on zoom (details to follow).  Our special guest will be PK Diffenbaugh, Superintendent of Monterey Peninsula Unified School District to discuss housing for teachers in the district.   The meeting is open to all residents of Old Town, regardless of membership.

Wednesday, November 1, 2023 -Old Town Neighborhood Association Annual Member Appreciation Evening at the Perry House. 6pm-8pm   .   Save the date for our annual fabulous party at the Perry House for members of Old Town Neighborhood Association.  Enjoy an evening of great food, wine, beer and other beverages at this lovely historical home overlooking the harbor.  If you are not a member yet, please see the bottom of this bulletin.  More information to follow as event gets closer.   Opening of reservations will be available later for paid members with announcement in a future bulletin.

Thursday,  September 14, 2023, 12 noon- Free Concert at Colton Hall, with cellist Michelle Djokic, sponsored by Monterey Public Library.

Saturday, September 16, 8 am-2pm – Annual Sandcastle Building contest at Carmel Beach between  10th and 12th Avenue.  Building at 8 am; Judging at 12 noon.  Free.  The theme this year is “Time Travel Into the Future”.  Everyone who would like to build a castle can enter the contest by coming to the registration booth across from 11th Avenue on the beach, and judges bestow awards for multiple categories, from the coveted Golden Shovel to the tongue-in cheek Sour Grapes.  Because bribery (non-monetary) is encouraged, it’s not unusual to see platters of food, bottles of wine, chair massages and other indulgences being offered to the people in charge.  For more information call Carmel Community Services at (831) 620-2020.

Friday, September 8, 5:30 “Andrew Carnegie and his Legacy – LIVE!” presented by local actor Howard Burnham at the Pacific Grove Library, 550 Central Avenue, Pacific Grove.  Free and open to the public.  The Pacific Grove Library was built through funding by Andrew Carnegie, as was the building at 425 Van  Buren in Monterey (The Segal Building at MIIS).  No RSVP needed.

Friday, Sept 8, 3-9 pm, Saturday, Sept 9, 10-9 pm, and Sunday, Sept 10, 10-6 pm.- 90th Festa Italia Celebration at Custom House Plaza.  Enjoy Italian music, dancing by the Tarantala dancers, bocce tournament, great Italian food, and craft vendors at this colorful free festival.  Friday’s dancing starts with the Money Band Friday evening from 6-9 pm.  Don’t miss the Blessing of the Fleet and the Walk on the wharf on Saturday morning beginning at 10 am.  This year there will also be a FREE cioppino cooking demonstration by award-winning chef Tene Shake Saturday at 1 pm in front of the Grotto/Foor Market Kokomos on the wharf.  Free copies of the recipe will be available.  Other entertainers include the Mike Marotta Band, Anna Marotta Halim, Anthony Lane Band and Pasquale Esposito.   For a full schedule, visit festaitaliamonterey.org.

Old Town Special Bulletin: Aug 30 Meeting

There will be a special City Council meeting next Wednesday, August 30th, at 4pm to discuss the Madison Street Affordable Housing Development.  Mid-Pen Housing would love all of your support for the project, and they think the City Council would benefit greatly from hearing the community’s perspective.  Mid-Pen Housing will be discussing the site plan they presented at the community meeting and the next steps to work toward design and financing. Residents are invited to reach out to Vanessa Diffenbaugh directly if you have questions or would like to discuss in advance. Saturday, July 15, 2-4 pm – Old Town Neighborhood Association Annual Summer Social in the Veteran’s Park Group Site 1 (on the main lawn, close to the play structure).  This is a free family event for all Old Town residents, and a great time to socialize with neighbors and enjoy food and perhaps a friendly game of bocce, Jumbo Jenga corn hole or Ladder Ball.  OTNA will provide snacks and cold drinks (no alcohol allowed) but residents are encouraged, but not required, to bring a hand-held sweet or savory snack to share.  Dogs on leash welcome too.  Reservations not required.  Please park along Veteran’s Drive or by basketball courts, but not in campsites.   Questions? Sunday, July 23, 10 am -4 pm – Stanton Art Market- Free celebration of local arts at the Stanton Center, 5 Custom House Plaza.   Enjoy music while enjoying shoppable art.

Saturday, August 5, 3-6 pm – Reception of new artists at Venture Gallery at the Portola Hotel.  See the new exhibits and meet Craig Lauterbach (wood scuptures), Sarah Leonard (Coastal oil paintings), and Dee Steiner (romantic oil paintings of park, trails and sunsets in impressionistic style) at this artist reception.  The show runs August 1-31.

CAR WEEK

Our peninsula is in full swing during car week.  Details of events can be found at: https://whatsupmonterey.com/article/activities/monterey-car-week-overview.   Besides the elegant Concours d’Elegance on August 20 and the many private clubs, auctions, and events, there are also many free events, some within walking distance of Old Town:

Friday, August 11, 5-7 pm – Monterey Kick-Off Cruise in of Historic Racing Cars are on exhibit in the 300 block of Alvarado Street (Del Monte corner) in Monterey at this free event.   There is also a Driver’s Reception at Cibo’s Restaurant open to the public from 5-7 pm with complimentary appetizers and live jazz starting at 5:30. 

Wednesday, August 16, 12-5 pm – Little Car Show in downtown Pacific Grove on Lighthouse Avenue.  View 100 miniature cars with parade and tour around the coastline starting at 5 pm.   Free event.

Thursday, August 17, 7 am- 12 noon- Tours d’Elegance -Catch a glimpse of cars that will compete in the Concours d’Elegance as they tour from Pebble Beach around the peninsula and return to Pebble Beach.  

Thursday, August 17, 11am-4 pm – Prancing Ponies- on Ocean Avenue in Carmel.  See women-owned exotic, classic, muscle, sports, and electric cars at this free event.  Fashion show featuring local models and designers.  Awards for best presentation at 4 pm.

Friday, August 18, 12 noon – 6 pm- Pacific Grove Rotary Councours Auto Rally- View vintage cars on display at Lighthouse and Forest in downtown Pacific Grove.  Best in class will be awarded at 4 pm.  Parade of the cars and rally begin at 5 pm, with cars touring the shoreline from Lovers Point to Asilomar and returning at 6 pm.   

Saturday, August 19, 1-6 pm – Exotics on Broadway (formerly at Cannery Row) – View super, hyper and exotic cars at this free event on General Jim Moore Boulevard between Broadway and San Pablo Ave in Seaside. 

Saturday, August 19, 8 am -1:30 pm Concours d’Lemons – See the ugly rust buckets and misfits of the car world at this hilarious free event at Seaside City Hall, 440 Hartcourt Avenue in Seaside.   Thrift store trophies will be awarded for worst in class, with judges openly available for bribes.

“A Tribute to Sloat’s Landing” in honor of its 177th anniversary.  See this new exhibit through July 31 at the Stanton Center at Custom House Plaza including a video to view in the auditorium.  Open Thursday to Saturday, 10-5 pm.  The Sloat exhibit/video is free to visitors.

“Extraordinary Valor: The Lost History of the Buffalo Solders in Monterey” new exhibit now open on Saturdays and Sundays 10am-4pm at the Lower Presidio Museum.  Free.

Monterey’s Free Trolley Is in Service again!  Daily 10-6pm until Labor Day.
