25 – Alvin Stahl House

946 Franklin Street
1920 Craftsman Bungalow

This residence, built circa 1920, is an intact example of the Craftsman/Bungalow style of working and middle-class housing of the Monterey Heights subdivision on the Franklin Street Hill after the Monterey and Pacific Grove streetcar line was electrified and had extended its line to the Ord Barracks (Presidio of Monterey) in 1904. Alvin Stahl, a mechanic, was the first owner until 1941 when DeWitt Throp, a doorman, purchased the property. Character-defining features include its one-story form, low-pitched side-gabled roof, with an expansive front-gabled porch.

Directions to the next house: Continue down W. Franklin Street, cross Clay Street, and the next house is on the corner of W. Franklin Street and Monroe Street: the Finch Fleischer House (410 Monroe Street), #26 on the map below.
