5 – Andrew Perria Home

599 Jefferson Street
ca1890 Colonial Revival

The Andrew Perria Home was donated to the California State Parks by the Andrew Perria family, was the home of a Portuguese whaler from the Azores Islands. Andrew Silveria, who changed his name to Andrew Perria after immigrating here in the 1870s, worked for one of the old Portuguese whaling companies operating out of the Whaling Station, part of the California Historic Park today, near the wharf. Shore whaling declined in the 1890s due to the scarcity of whales and decline in the price of whale oil. Andrew Perria left the whale industry but remained in Monterey, working as a gardener and laborer, eventually building the home for his family in the Colonial Revival style. His family donated the home to the California State Park to be used as a museum.
