454 Cedar Street at Roosevelt
1926 Spanish Revival
The Norman H. Davis House was built in 1926 and is a fine and rare example of the hipped-roof subtype of the Spanish Eclectic Revival Style of architecture introduced to California at the 1915 Pacific International Exposition. Many of the home’s aesthetics resemble the design work of prominent Monterey architect Albert B. Coats. Norman H Davis served in the United States Army and the Davis family likely held ownership in the property between 1972 and 1960, as suggested by the Polk business directories for Monterey. Mary Davis, the widow of the original owner, rented the property after 1930 to a series of tenants over time that included Monterey physician Mast Wolfson (1933-1941) and Knute Hovden, owner of Hovden Food Products (1953-54). The Hovden Cannery was at the site of the current Monterey Bay Aquarium.
Directions to the next house: Continue down Roosevelt Street and turn right on High Street. You’ll see the Mr. Charles B. McDougall House (458 High Street) on the corner, #22 on the map below.
