14 – John Thompson House

801 Jefferson Street
ca1926 Arts and Crafts

The John Thompson House was built in 1930 for Mr. John M Thompson, noted local attorney who helped draft the first zoning ordinance for the Big Sur Coastal Zone. This eclectic bungalow style home built of Carmel stone is a grand example of the many Carmel stone structures built by J C Anthony, highly regarded master builder and adobe restorer on the Monterey Peninsula. Masonry work was done by Angelo DeMaria, who was also widely respected for his artistry.

Directions to the next house: You’re standing at the corner of Jefferson Street and Monroe Street, and the next house is just down Monroe Street (towards the ocean). It’s the Frank Vetrano Home (487 Monroe Street), #15 on the map below.
