8 – George Hudson House

660 Madison Street
ca1910 Craftsman Bungalow

The George Hudson House is a pre-1912 large Craftsman Bungalow with Neoclassical elements. It was built on Lots 2 and 3 of the 1906 Rodricks Subdivision of Block 118. This distinctive house is two stories in height, and sits behind a large formal yard shielded from public view by a tall fence at the public right of way. The hipped roof portion of the house has boxed eaves. An exterior chimney is located ono the wall of the west elevation. A small recessed arched porch provides entry to the house. The front façade of the house has two large parabolic focal windows. These fixed wood windows are divided into three parts.

The house was owned by George Hudson, a prominent attorney and mayor of Monterey. Mr. Hudson opened the first law firm in Monterey on Polk Street.

Directions to the next house: You don’t have to travel very far as the next few homes are very close together. Just a few homes up Madison Street you’ll see the Oliver G. Lannon House (681 Madison Street) across the street, and #9 on the map below!
