28 – Josephine Zimmerman-Metz Home

In the early 1900s this German-American family was involved with banking and with land development including much of Monterey’s Old Town.  Josephine Zimmerman came to California by covered wagon, settling first in San Francisco. She and her husband moved to Monterey and chose this lot for the view in 1910 and build this Greene and Greene inspired Craftsman style home for the matriarch in 1911. The style is more functioning and utilitarian than the more common Victorian style. Their son, Metz, was reportedly involved with setting up the English style long lots with an alley in the back, as this and many others on Larkin Street have.
